Principal's Welcome

Welcome to MacArthur Middle School, home of the Marauders!

Well, we have six more weeks of this wonderful weather ahead of us if we follow the prognostication of the groundhog. But at MacArthur we are thinking about spring. Next week starts the meetings for the Spring Musical and a number of clubs are starting up, running from now until Spring Break, check out Schoology for more information!

Join us for Science Night on February 9th. If you would like to learn more about MacArthur, come early, I will be hosting a Coffee reception at 5pm.

Earlier this week, Ms. Gage and I went to Dr. Devorah Heitner's talk that D23 & D26 co-hosted. She is the author of Screenwise and offers up some great parent tips from all of her research, working with families and teens. Please watch her presentation, it is full of useful information:

As part of our ongoing school improvement efforts, we ask that

all parents please take the Illinois 5 Essentials Survey.

7th Grade Science

A sample sales pitch that explains all of their materials

7th Grade Science just finished up the Forces and Motion unit, where we studied Newton's First and Second Law. As a culmination, students participated in their first Engineering Design Project where they were given the challenge to design a car built from simple household materials that could only be powered by a balloon. After brainstorming design plans and drawing out blueprints, each group built, tested, and redesigned their cars in an effort to get them to move farther and faster each time. They had to calculate the speed and acceleration for each trial and consider how force and mass might affect this outcome. It was certainly a test of perseverance and patience! Finally, students put together a presentation to communicate the process their cars went through from start to finish, as well as a sales pitch advertisement trying to persuade consumers to buy their car! Up next, we will be studying Newton's Third Law of Motion. Students will have an opportunity to participate in lab stations demonstrating action reaction forces. We will finish up our physics module with a Rube Goldberg Machine engineering project.

8th Grade

In 8th-grade ELA this week, our first StudySync Unit concluded. Students applied their skills to compose a suspenseful narrative writing piece as their final assignment. We are eager to be starting unit two of the new curriculum! Titled, Past and Present, this unit prepares students to explore questions about how they see themselves in the world. Through reading various genres (a speech, fiction, and a poem) students will express their ideas about identity and belonging, both past and present. The unit will eventually culminate with a literary analysis. In social studies, our six-week study of World War One came to an end. Students enjoyed preparing for the test by playing one of their favorite apps, Blooket, which features a variety of competitive review games. After this, we’re headed into the 1920s and 30s! A few of the topics we’ll be covering include radicalism, the “automobile age”, The Harlem Renaissance, The Roaring 20s, The Great Depression, The Dust Bowl, and The New Deal.

District News and Update

Referendum to be placed on April 4 Ballot

The Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to place a referendum question on the April 4 ballot.

As you likely know, this referendum would provide funding for installing security equipment and replacing windows, siding and doors at MacArthur Middle School, Anne Sullivan Elementary School, Betsy Ross Elementary School and Eisenhower Elementary School, and expanding and renovating Eisenhower Elementary School for full day kindergarten and for other school purposes.

We thank our Citizens' Task Force and all who contributed feedback through the surveys or at informational sessions. Your voice and input throughout this process helps us to ensure that we are following the community's expectations.
