In 7th grade science, we are wrapping up our Earth Science Bundle. First we studied the rock cycle and modeled the formation of three different types of rocks using crayons! We also used chemicals to create different sized crystals that form in igneous rocks under various conditions. Next, we focused on the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition, and how they shape our Earth, as well as landforms that they can create. We had fun using lots and lots of sand to model how water, wind, ice, and gravity affect these processes! After that, we studied various geoscience processes, such as: landslides, earthquakes, mountain formation, cave formation, volcanoes, and meteor strikes. We used graham crackers and frosting to model how plate tectonics plays a role in many of these processes! We spent a lot of time categorizing the effect of each one as large or small scale. Currently, we are looking more in depth at natural hazards, where they occur, how they are predicted, and how to stay safe from them. Next week, students will begin a group research project about one of the natural hazards and teach the class more about it! |
