CRCSD Happenings
Voices of the Voiceless Open Mic at Kennedy

Each week during the month of February, we will highlight an activity from our schools to celebrate Black History Month.

Last Friday, over 100 people filled the auditorium in Kennedy High School for the Voices of the Voiceless open mic, an event hosted by the Black Student Union, Gay-Straight Association, and Muslim Student Alliance.

The open mic event gave students a chance to express themselves through visual arts, dance, and spoken word. Students worked diligently over several weeks to write, workshop, revise, and practice.

"They were brave and vulnerable in front of their peers, family members, educators, and the community," said Rachel Collins, Kennedy Black Student Union co-sponsor. "Their pieces inspired all of us to see the world from many points of view and showcased the power of speaking our truth."
Virtual Learning for K-8 Families
in 2022-23 School Year
Virtual option moves from CRVA and Edgenuity
to Edgenuity only

As we have navigated through the pandemic, Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) has provided a variety of ways that students and families can engage in learning. One of the learning opportunities CRCSD has recently provided is the Cedar Rapids Virtual Academy (CRVA). CRCSD announces that, beginning with the 2022-2023 school year, it will no longer offer CRVA in its original format.

CRCSD has learned from its current structures what educational options work best within its system to serve students and families. As we plan for instruction for the 2022-2023 school year, CRCSD will offer a virtual option for K-8 learners. The option CRCSD will provide is Edgenuity, an online learning program for students where they complete age-appropriate, engaging lessons with access to tools that support learning, including text-to-speech, audio and translation, text and picture dictionaries, and more. Edgenuity offers a self-paced flexible option in which students are expected to make daily progress on assignments and lessons. Educators will not provide direct instruction to students, but they will monitor student progress and performance with usage statistics, grading and feedback tools, curriculum maps, and communication tools.

If you have questions about this virtual platform or are interested in this option for your child/children, please reach out to your building principal. Thank you for your partnership and support.
Champions Hiring Events and Pricing Information

As previously communicated, beginning this summer Cedar Rapids Community School District is partnering with Champions for additional summer school programming options. Additionally, beginning in the fall of 2022, CRCSD will partner with Champions for before- and after-school extended learning programs in all of our elementary and middle school buildings across the district, including wrap-around services at Truman Early Childhood Center.

This partnership will provide students and families with equitable, accessible, and affordable options for care consistent throughout CRCSD. These expanded opportunities will mean all families and students can receive the services they need in the locations their child attends school.
