From the Economic Development Desk of the
December 16, 2020
You are receiving this email because your organization is at one of the economic development tiers with the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce. As always, we encourage your comments and questions.
I know this sounds cliche’ but time sure has flown by. I am winding down my first year in this role that begun at the start of 2020. I cannot believe I am writing my 12th economic development update of the year. Like many of the updates that proceeded this one, it centers on the pandemic and the impact it is having on so many of us.

Recently the MEDC announced another round of funding to help small businesses. This funding was designed to help restaurants and bars, lodging providers, live event venues and movie theaters, conference and meeting facilities, indoor recreation facilities, and gyms and fitness centers. The amount of money was small compared to the Restart program we administered in August ($10 million vs $100 million statewide). This grant was awarded on the timeliness of the applicant’s submission. Unfortunately, we were not asked to be an administrator this time, the MEDC decided to work with a single organization statewide.

On a brighter note, Target awarded 510 grant awards through MEDC's first two grant programs. We did it equitably, efficiently, and timely with each county get a proportional amount.

I know some businesses are really concerned about the next few months. Those that weathered the storm last spring thought the worst was behind them. Now comes wave two and another shut down at the worst possible time. The MEDC has indicated that if a federal relief package is passed, they would seek the help of organizations like ours to handle the support for our communities once again. Of course, we will be ready to help should we be given the chance. In the meantime, we will continue to lobby on your behalf for support and the opportunity to assist.

I have heard stories from some of our local businesses having a good Christmas season with many noticing the impact of the shopping local message. I am glad to hear it and hope the “support local” trend continues long after the pandemic has begun to fade from our memories. I would also encourage you to consider buying gift cards from our local restaurants that are being harmed in this most recent shutdown.

We are working toward some interesting things for 2021 and can't wait to share them with you.

Stay well, be well. Happy Holidays!

Mike and Team
