For the second year in a row, Ituna has been named Saskatchewan’s Most Active Community through the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, presented by Novo Nordisk and funded by the Government of Canada.

Rachel Bachinski, Recreation Practitioner with the Town of Ituna, says “Truthfully it is hard to believe,”. “Winning last year was amazing but winning again this year has been surreal.”

The ParticipACTION Community Challenge takes place throughout June and encourages people across Canada to get active, connect with others and make room for physical activity. This year, more than 385 communities took part, with Québec City named Canada’s Most Active Community. Ituna was one of the provincial winners recognized across the country.

After introducing the challenge to the community last year, people in Ituna seemed to take it from there.

Throughout June, people paired up to walk and get active together. The senior hockey team hosted its annual slo-pitch tournament, the RM held its annual golf tournament, and the local pickleball group made sure participants at games and practices were being counted. A town-wide “poker” scavenger hunt got people moving, and even a wedding on the golf course became part of the challenge when guests walked to the ceremony.

In total, Ituna had eight registered organizations, 10 active groups and 30 different community events.

For Rachel, the numbers don't tell the whole story anyway. “I believe it is the fact that there are so many options for people to choose from depending on your interest,” she says. And that variety seems to be one of Ituna’s strengths. There isn't one particular activity that everyone has to take part in. Instead, people can find something that works for them, whether that's walking, pickleball, golf, slo-pitch or simply getting together with others and being active.

While there were some changes to the Community Challenge this year, including how participation was registered and tracked, the community continued to find plenty of ways to take part.

What didn't change was the community's willingness to get involved. Different groups, organizations and individuals all found their own ways to participate, making it a true community effort rather than something organized by just one person.

And there was definitely some friendly competition along the way. Throughout June, people kept an eye on the Community Challenge standings to see how Ituna was doing, adding a little extra excitement as the month went on.

As Saskatchewan’s Most Active Community, Ituna received $10,000 to support local sport and physical activity initiatives. The funding includes $5,000 from ParticipACTION and $5,000 from the Government of Saskatchewan.

The Town of Ituna has allocated the funding to the Regional Park, where it will be used to purchase new solar panels for the swimming pool.

For Ituna, the challenge has become about more than winning. It has shown what can happen when a community is willing to get involved and try something new.

“I presented it to the community and they accepted it with open minds,” Rachel says. “You never know what can happen until you try!”

Ituna’s second consecutive win is something to celebrate, and we’re proud to have a community like Ituna right here in the Parkland Valley District. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this happen, and we can’t wait to see what comes next!
