The month of October was busy with celebrations with folks like you, our supporters, who have been key to 25 years of growing successful programs at PWSSC.

Maybe you were one of the people who participated in our party circuit at our Snow City Cafe reception in Anchorage, where over 70 people came out to toast our 25th anniversary year and cheer us on as we plan for the future.

Maybe you were one of the folks who attended the second annual (but first in taste) Dessert Dash membership event here in Cordova. If you were there, you know that getting in was free, but getting the dessert you wanted was another story. I am glad to report that no elbows were thrown and all attendees had the opportunity to enjoy some remarkable confections courtesy of the amazing volunteer bakers of Cordova.

If you're far away or didn't have the benefit of going to either of those events, I invite you to watch this beautiful ~2 minute video whose images are a reminder of why we choose to work in this place, improving understanding of the world's richest waters.

Until next time,

Katrina Hoffman

University of Oregon students descend on Cordova to capture some of its many, untold stories.

What do you get when you crowd four professors and 19 students from the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication into a summer cabin for a month-long field course? Some inspirational videos, images and stories.

If you haven't been to Cordova in a while or you're keen to see some PWSSC researchers in action, we invite you to explore the suite of video clips, several of which feature PWSSC scientists. This month, we highlight Guru Amar Khalsa's contribution, Counting Herring. Bonus points if you can guess in advance which organisms qualify as the "Lucky Charms" of the sea!

Staff and Board changes in October

At the turn of our fiscal year, board members met in Anchorage for the fall board meeting. This meeting marked the departure of several long-standing board members with the addition of four new board members. Read more about our fond farewells and hearty welcomes here.

We also welcomed our new Education Coordinator last week, Cara Goodwin, pictured here. Click here to read Cara's story.

Discovery Room gets students engaged in science and exploration

October was a busy month for our education staff members and the fourth through sixth grade classes in Cordova. Two Discovery Room units were taught to each grade on either end of the month, focusing on locally relevant themes such as salmon, herring and ocean technology.
