Who is Jeff Cobb?
Jeff Cobb our National Sales Manager has been in the Court Reporting Industry since the 1980's.
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Jeff currently resides in Palo Alto, CA with his wife.
| | | |
How did you start working in the court reporting industry, and how long have you been in it?
I have been in the industry for four decades, starting as a court reporter in the Marine Corps. After eight years of reporting, I experienced bilateral radial nerve entrapment and had to quit reporting. I found a career with Stenograph in 1991 as a District Sales Manager. I stayed with Stenograph through 2008 and left as a Regional Sales Manager. I then joined a boutique agency in Seattle. I started their video division, becoming a Trial Director trainer and trial technician. After three years, I joined Merrill/DTI/Epiq as VP of Operations and Sales in San Francisco from 2010 to 2019. I was then called back to Stenograph to help design an enterprise solution for agencies in 2019 through 2022.

What did you do in the military?
Court Reporter and Note reader/Transcriber for the first steno-reporters in the Marines.
Any war stories you can share or anything you can talk about your military life?
I was stationed in Camp Pendleton, CA; Okinawa, Japan; and Kaneohe, Hawaii. Our most significant case was a three-month murder trial in Okinawa and over 3,000 pages. It was grueling work using IBM Selectric II typewriters with three carbon copies. I remember throwing a pad of steno notes against the wall late one night…not happy with the reporter's efforts for that day, and we all had a good laugh. They did award me with a Letter of Commendation for that trial.
|
Share an unforgettable experience during boot camp or what did you learn in boot camp?
They asked for two volunteers for a secret mission in boot camp. I volunteered. The secret mission was to steal all the toilet paper from a platoon next door in the middle of the night. It took many silent trips, but we succeeded. The following day, the other platoon's drill instructor came over yelling at us, wanting to know who did it, and no one spoke up.
Who is your mentor growing up?
My father received the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts for a machine gun wound in his leg at the Battle of Anzio in Italy during WWII.
| |
I heard from the grapevine that you used to transcribe for the Oscars, how was that like?
Yes. I worked the Academy Awards for 10 years helping create transcripts for the media. We had three live reporters four feet from the winners on stage taking down Q&A from the worldwide journalists in the room. We then printed out hard copies for them to write their next-day stories. Lots of pressure and lots of fun, but 10 years was enough 😊.
What would you do if you were the last man standing?
Continually search for other humans to connect with.
| |
What is your wife's name and how did you meet?
Betty, we met at a nightclub in Waikiki. She told me her name was Linda and that she had to work early at the hospital the next day, so I showed up with pastries and coffee for Linda . They didn't have a Linda there, so I gave them to the receptionist… I kept calling the hospital, and one nurse finally asked me where I had met her. I told her, and she said I know two girls who go there, and I'll find out which one it is and have her call you back because you're a nice guy. When she called me, she said, "I was going to call you…." 37 years later, here we are.
| |
How many kids do you have and what are their names?
We have two, Mackenzie and Mason and we have one granddaughter and her name is Evelyn Rose.
What do you do during your spare time?
Spend time with family; golf with friends; work out; read or listen to audiobooks.
| |
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A professional barrel-jumper speed-skater (when it was "almost" an Olympic sport).
What would you like to advise your 12-year-old self?
What your mind can conceive and believe, it will achieve.
| |
What is your favorite movie of all time, and why?
Full Metal Jacket – a genuine Marine Corps experience.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Vanilla
Chicken or Steak?
Steak, but my doctor wants me to say Chicken.

Who is Jasper?
Jasper O'Farrell, my great-great grandfather, left Ireland when he was 21 and came around the horn. Lived in Chile for two years, learned Spanish, and then came to San Francisco, Yuba Bueno. He surveyed all of California, got into politics, became a senator, and was the wealthiest man in California at one time. Unfortunately, like so many during the Gold Rush, he lost everything. Before he did, he built the Church of St. Avila (where they filmed The Birds) in Bodega Bay and donated it to the community.
| | | |
Jasper O'Farrell is buried in a small cemetery in Bodega Bay, CA.
What genre of music do you listen to?

If you were to be stranded on an island, what three essentials do you wish you had with you and why?

What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include playing golf, working out, and volunteering as a vice-president for the Society of California Pioneers.

Did You Know?
Did you know that Jeff Cobb and Phyllis Lykken worked together back in 1996 where they collaborated in streaming an online Microsoft Show called Encarta, with Linda Ellerbee, Rosie O'Donnell, Jen & Berry and other famous people realtime to the internet. As far as we all knew, including the execs at Microsoft, it was the first time this had ever been done.
Pretty cool, huh?

What Does it Take to Win Fantasy Football?
It is very difficult to master playing fantasy football, and it could be frustrating too at times. However it is fun to play.
Fantasy Football is a math-based game based on the real-life NFL players. Each week you fill out a roster by "starting" players at the various positions allowed based on your league settings. The statistics your starting players accumulate on the field contribute to their point total for the week. The point totals of all of the players in your starting line up are tallied into your weekly score and if you have a higher total than you opponent, you win the week!

Litigation Services has been holding their annual Fantasy Football game since 2014 and as you can see, Seth Hertin our COO has won three times for the past 9 seasons. followed by Terrell Holloway with two wins. Who do you think will win 2023 Season?

Stephanie Rhinehart
Stephanie lives in Portland. Her home burned to the ground on January 1, 2022. She had all of her files safely backed up on Dropbox and we were able to get her pending jobs out. One of our other court reporters, Jan Marie Glaze, edited and proofed one of the jobs top to bottom and donated all of her time and income for the job to Stephanie, and on the second job, which was quite large, Jan Marie donated one half of the income for the job back to Stephanie. Stephanie lost everything in the fire, all court reporting equipment and everything in her home, as well as her pets perished. She is back to working for us living out of a hotel as she as working with her insurance company to move through this. THAT’S resilience right there. But lots of coming together to help Stephanie and get our clients their jobs, with very little downtime.
Stephanie was introduced in the FB post on NCRA's sight as their New Professional Profile.

How to Dress for Success.
Choosing the right clothing can boost your confidence, show your office how seriously you take your job, and perform well at work.
We were taught not to judge a book by its cover, but that's just not how the world works. What you wear at work tells people who you are, whether you want it to or not.
Your style matters for three big reasons:
-
Well-dressed gives good impressions. Yes, really. How you dress affects how people perceive you. If you dress well, people will notice.
-
Outer Style Leads to Inner Confidence. Clothes affect how you perceive your own abilities. Give importance in the work you are in by presenting yourself with the proper workplace attire. Not only will it look good but it will boost your confidence.
-
It Streamlines Your Day. You can pretty much put your outfits on autopilot. Be strategic with your clothing by creating a capsule wardrobe or prepare it the night before.
Learning how to dress for success can empower your moves in life and at work. Boost your confidence, so you can stand tall and show everyone you're a go-getter without saying a word.
Looking great does not need to look forced. Below are our colleagues from around the nation, Looking sharp ladies and gents!
