key notes from the president | | |
For almost two decades, Doug Martin has been the heart and soul of the band program at Langley High School. A proud Fairfax County native, born and raised in Vienna, Mr. Martin brought with him not only years of experience from across Fairfax County Public Schools, but also an unwavering passion for music, education, and community.
Under his leadership, the Langley band program has flourished. Through dedication, encouragement, and high standards, Mr. Martin helped shape the program into one of excellence and pride, inspiring generations of students to grow not only as musicians, but as people. The inspiring growth of the program, including some of the largest incoming band classes in school history, stands as a testament to the welcoming and vibrant culture he created.
Among the many unforgettable moments during his tenure were the band’s remarkable performance at Carnegie Hall in 2019 and the achievement of Superior ratings by the Marching Saxons and all three concert ensembles that same year and since then. Yet beyond awards and accolades, Mr. Martin’s greatest legacy lies in the countless students, parents, and colleagues whose lives he touched through kindness, mentorship, and music.

Mr. Martin taught his students far more than notes and rhythms. He taught discipline, teamwork, resilience, and the power of creating something meaningful together. His impact will continue to resonate through every performance, every rehearsal, and every student who carries forward the lessons he shared and with his colleagues who will follow in his footsteps.
Thank you, Mr. Martin, for your dedication, leadership, and the extraordinary music you brought into the lives of so many. Your legacy at Langley will never fade.
