Back in 1976, John Reed wrote a "
memo from the beach" while on vacation. It laid the groundwork for the launch of Citibank's ATM network, which transformed the banking system. Despite a wild roller coaster ride, Citibank has survived and thrived a total of 200+ years, continually re-inventing and expanding.
Fintech has changed, but survival and growth are based on some timeless principles. Strategy, branding, tenacity, talent, and an eye toward technology innovation were all qualities possessed by my former employer. My time there wasn't always a "day at the beach" but I learned some incredible lessons that apply to all sizes and types of companies -- perhaps more now than ever before.
