Opal 2.0 features and demands encryption for the stored data so that an unauthorized person will not be able to see or access the data even if possession of a drive was gained. The specification standard stipulates that the hardware encryption is permanently active (“always on“). That means that Opal 2.0 is one of the main standards for the so-called SED self-encrypting drives.
