Volume EM Community Initiative Town Hall Meeting 2025

NEXT WEEK - OCTOBER 9th!

The Volume EM Community Initiative comes together for a virtual Town Hall meeting every year. This year’s event will be held on October 9th, 2025 from 3-6pm BST/10am-1pm ET. This will mark the 6th year that the community has come together in this way to hear updates from the working groups, from other community organisations, and to discuss topics shaping the future of volume EM. A key theme of this year’s Town Hall is strengthening connections across the global community.

Submit your images for Awesome vEM Images Competition 2025!

We are seeking impressive volume EM (vEM) images as part of our mission to promote our Volume EM Community Initiative and vEM techniques to the world! We'd love to offer you the opportunity to have your images featured on our official website and social media channels.

Submit to one (or both!) of our two categories:

  1. The Power of vEM - Share stunning images that highlight the capabilities of volume EM.
  2. Bringing Meaning to the Data (New!) - Share artful examples of how you use computational techniques to process your data, for example showing the process of co-registration or any of the many steps involved in segmentation!

🏆 Prizes: $250 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd & 3rd in each category

📅 Submission Deadline: October 6th, 5:00 PM Central Time

This competition is open to the public!

Empowering Research through Software Sandbox: CLEM-Reg Workshop

by Martyn Winn

The volumeEM community initiative continues to support training in data processing software. On Friday 19th September, 10 researchers from the vEM community attended a 2-hour course on the CLEM-Reg utility for aligning electron and fluorescence microscopy images. Students were introduced to Napari and the CLEM-Reg plugin, and given an example dataset to experiment with. The course used the software sandbox supported by the UKRI-STFC Data Analysis as a Service (DAaaS) platform. Software containers were constructed as part of the new CCP-volumeEM collaborative project, and deployed on the course platform. We are also participating in an EM image analysis course in Naples running 23rd – 26th September, with the software sandbox supporting courses on Napari/Empanada and MIB software.

Registration is now open for CCP-volumeEM community meeting: Towards a collaborative computational community for volume EM

Join us for the inaugural CCP-volumeEM Community Meeting, bringing together researchers, microscopists, biologists, computer scientists, image analysts, and software engineers to shape the future of computational support for volume electron microscopy (vEM). vEM encompasses powerful TEM and SEM-based techniques that enable nanometre-resolution imaging through cellular and tissue volumes, capable of producing terabyte-scale datasets. Effectively analysing these vast datasets requires coordinated, cross-disciplinary effort and robust, scalable tools. This meeting will kickstart the development of a Collaborative Computational Project (CCP) to address these challenges - sharing methods, establishing best practices, and supporting adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as AI, Next Generation File Formats (NGFF), and high performance computing. The meeting output will include a prioritised roadmap for how CCP-volumeEM can support the community going forward.

Date: 3rd November 2025

Time: 12pm - 5.30pm, followed by networking reception

Where: The Francis Crick Institute, London, NW1 1AT / Online

You can register at this link below (in-person or online, free tickets for both)

More info about what a Collaborative Computational Project (CCP) is can be found here, and a list of other CCPs across various domains is here.
