Hello Cabo Verde Expo
The Programming Committee of the Schooner Ernestina Commission needs volunteers to tell Ernestina's story during the Hello Cabo Verde Expo. Ernestina will be featured in a booth at the 3-day event at New Bedford State Pier Ferry Terminal and during a scheduled "Open Ship". The Expo is scheduled for Friday May 27 through Sunday May 29. NMHS Annual Meeting
National Maritime Historical Society held its 48th Annual Meeting at the New Bedford Whaling Museum on Saturday. SEMA Director Polly Zajac gave the participants an Ernestina update. NMHS was an early supporter of the ship in the 1970's during efforts to return her to the US and have been continuous supporters, including articles in their SEA HISTORY magazine. Cape Verdean Packets
The program Tuesday night at the New Bedford Whaling Museum was attended by a diverse and interested audience who enjoyed presentations by Michael Platzer, Laura Pires Hester, Stephan Platzer, and Norman Lopes. Michael credited anthropologist Traudi Coli, longtime Ernestina crew member, with collecting much of the data documenting the packet trade. A short trailer of Rick Lopes video was well received. We look forward to seeing the full length documentary. Thank you to the Whaling Museum for sponsoring this event and Beckman's for sponsoring the series.
