3 things to know

1. The Langley Art Show event on Tuesday was canceled due to the snow. However, all the art will be on display in the Main Office Hallway through Wed, Feb 19. Students, stop by anytime to vote for your favorite pieces. School designated viewing times for parents are today between 3-5 pm or tomorrow from 2-3:30 pm to vote for your favorite pieces. If you come tomorrow, sign in with the Front Office first.


2. Do you play chess? Join the PTSA for a USCF Rated (and non-rated games too!) chess tournament on Sat, Feb 22. All proceeds will support SHARE of McLean!   


3. Help make 2025 successful by donating to the PTSA, so we can continue supporting the teachers, counselors, students and staff at Langley! Click here to donate.

class of 2025 senior graduation dues: The senior graduation dues are required of all seniors. The funds will be used to pay for your students cap and gown, and to offset the cost of graduation and related expenses. You can pay the $75 senior graduation dues on MySchoolBucks.

senior yard signs: Let your graduate know how proud you are of them and support the ANGP. Purchase a Congrats Class of 2025 sign with their name on it to display in your yard! Deadline is extended to Mar 12! Click here to order.

sophomore class dinner and college night: Sophomore Class Dinner and College Application Case Studies Night is scheduled for Wed, Feb 26. Sophomore students and their parents/guardians are invited to join us from 5:45-6:45 pm for our class dinner. This fundraiser will be catered by Cafe Rio in the Cafeteria. Tickets are $25 per person and are non-refundable. RSVP by Feb 23. This is our only fundraiser of the year! Dinner tickets can be reserved here. To volunteer to help make this event a success sign up here.


College Night will begin at 7 pm. Come learn from the experts! This program will allow you to work alongside a college admission representative as part of a mock admissions team. Review applications and discuss applicants’ strengths and weaknesses. Gain a better understanding of the college admission process to plan for the rest of your high school experience. 


Parents and students are both invited to attend, one registration per family. Register for the Sophomore College Case Studies here. Registration will close on Feb 24. A dinner ticket is not required to attend the college night.


reflections winners!

Congratulations to the following LHS students whose Reflections entries earned Outstanding Interpretation Award (OI), Award of Excellence (AE) or Award of Merit (AM) at the Fairfax County Council level! 


Outstanding Interpretation Award entries in the FCCPTA level were advanced to the Virginia PTA (VA PTA) level.


Save the date: A student awards program is planned on Feb 28 for County level winners. Details will be announced on the FCCPTA website and by separate emails to awardee points of contact and local Reflections coordinators. All students and local coordinators in the OI, AE and AM awards lists are invited along with family and friends.

 

The whole Langley HS community is very proud of all the winners and wishes the students that placed first further success at the State level.

Calling all chess lovers! The Langley PTSA is hosting a Chess Tournament on Sat, Feb 22 at 9 am! There are both USCF-Rated and Non-Rated Sections! See the flyer here for more details and register here

winter appreciation luncheon

The amazing Langley teachers and staff enjoyed a fantastic Winter Appreciation Luncheon last week! Tropical island decorations brought warm beach vibes in mid-winter. Thank you to the Hospitality Committee of Kristi West, Shibha Arora and Marisha Patel and key volunteers Goral Vasani and Christie Jorge. A shout out to the custodians who helped with the event and to all the Langley Bakers for the festive desserts! A special thanks to the following parent volunteers who helped the day of: Lin Raso, Ginta Sambandam, Elina Dimitropoulos, Michele Teitelbaum, Komal Tengli, Jenny Peoples, Sondra May, Lucy Sang and Deepa Seonie & family.

Join LHS Psychologist Anna Brown and Social Worker Jordan Payne for an engaging parent conversation on Jennifer Wallace’s book, Never Enough. Never Enough “takes readers on a journey into the heart of toxic achievement culture and offers practical, actionable solutions for families, schools and communities.” 


Wallace concludes that “kids who receive feedback that they matter, no matter what, are more likely to have the resilience, self-confidence and psychological security to survive.” Jennifer Wallace is an award-winning journalist who began her career at 60 Minutes and contributes to the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. Mark your calendar for Fri, Mar 28 at 9 am in the Lecture Hall

sports notes

boys & girls basketball vs mclean: The Langley boys and girls varsity basketball teams will be playing in a double-header game versus McLean at McLean HS tonight, Thurs, Feb 13. Game times are girls at 5:45 pm and boys at 7:30 pm


Tickets go on sale at Door #10 at 5 pm: $5 for students, $7 for adults, cash only. Free admission to senior citizens and children under 6. Arrive early, as the game is expected to sell out. Once the game is sold-out, no spectators will be allowed to enter. There are no pre-sale tickets. Also, signs/posters, backpacks, large purses, outside food and drink are not permitted.

crew open house: Are you interested in learning more about joining Langley Crew? Want to “try-out” an erg? Come to our Open House and information session Sat Feb 15 from 10 am to 12 pm. Come see our athletes during the last Saturday winter conditioning practice before we get on the water. Talk to other parents, athletes and coaches about this amazing sport! Students can also come by the science hallway any afternoon through Feb 21 starting at 3:30 pm to see a conditioning practice and talk to the team!

spring sports athlete registration: Athlete Registration begins soon! First day of tryouts is Mon, Feb 24. Visit the Langley Athletics website for more information about registration and tryout dates for each sport.


  • Registration must be done each year. If you registered for the 2023-2024 school year, you need to re-register for the 2024-2025 school year. Register your child here.


  • To participate in Langley sports, students must complete a physical after May 1, 2024. The physical must be done on the official VHSL form. Submit completed VHSL Physicals by one of the following ways:


  • Dropping them off in the Activities Office
  • Mailing them to: Langley HS 6520 Georgetown Pike, McLean VA 22101, ATTN: Activities Office
  • Scanning and emailing to langleyathletics@fcps.edu.

scc parent discussion: autism and social skills

The Safe Community Coalition offers monthly parent discussion groups facilitated by licensed mental health professionals. This month’s topic, Autism and Social Skills, will address the challenges children and teens with symptoms of Autism may experience with emotional regulation, communication, social interaction, transitions and flexible

thinking.


Join Robyne Davis, MA, LPC and Becky Kohm, M.A.T., Ed.S. as they share strategies to provide support in these areas in both the home and school settings. Assessment, symptoms and treatment approaches will be discussed as well.


This discussion will take place Feb 13 at 7 pm at the McLean Community

Center.
