From the Economic Development Desk of the
February 18, 2021
You are receiving this email because your organization is at one of the economic development tiers with the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce. As always, we encourage your comments and questions.
Last month my update centered on a new statewide grant program to help small businesses. The MEDC Survival Grant Program was announced mid-January and funded through the Michigan Strategic Fund. This program provided $55 million statewide for small business support. Target was tasked with the administration of the program for our part of the state. This program was put into place to directly support those small businesses most impacted by the mask order that took effect in November 2020.

With support of Adam and Alisha, and the willingness of our committee members to give priority to this grant process, we had the funding out the door by January 29th. Considering we did not gain access to the grant applications until January 25th, we did quite well as a team. We received 329 applications and the committee approved 60% of them throughout our five county area.

Target was not involved in making decisions about the grants or the amounts. A committee made up of individuals from the five county area did the grading/scoring of the requests and made the recommendation on the level of support. Target only coordinated all the activity and disbursed funds once grants were approved by the committee.

So far in a little over six months, Target has participated in two grant programs totaling $5.4 million in funding disbursed to approximately 600 businesses. At the conclusion of the Survival Grant Program, we learned there is discussion of yet another grant program being considered that could be funded with unused CARES Act funds. While there is no timetable for another possible grant program, it was at least mentioned. Continue to watch the chamber website in the event any new programs are announced in the future.

Development Updates
Since last newsletter we seen progress on several different development projects being considered. There are several projects in various stages of due diligence, and I stand hopeful some of these will get announced and commence. We should all be encouraged by the fact there is interest in our community.

In the meantime, continue to support your local businesses and enjoy dining in at some of our fine local restaurants. While capacity is limited at this point, it is nice to see them open again.

Be well!
We here at the chamber and economic development are still focused on our missions and continue to work for you.
