Important Conversations
If your child's school says your child doesn't need special services because they are doing fine in class, you can request an evaluation by explaining why an evaluation is still needed.
A child might struggle with things like speaking, moving, social skills, or self-care, even if their grades are good. Some children do well only because their families provide extra help outside of school, which may not be fair. Every child has the right to be tested in any area where a disability is suspected.
South Dakota Parent Connection has co-authored a guide, Dare To Dialogue...Reach YES! This guide helps parents work with schools to get the right support for their child’s education. It includes checklists and sample letters to request evaluations for special education services. It also provides ways to respond when schools say no to things like Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Extended School Year services, or assistive technology. Parents can use these tools to track decisions made in IEP or 504 meetings and understand their rights. These resources can help make it easier for families to get the support and services their child needs.
Every child deserves an education that fits their unique needs. Schools must look at all areas where a child may need support, not just test scores. If you think your child has a disability or needs extra help, don’t be afraid to ask questions, request testing, and speak up for their education. The sooner a child gets the right support, the better they can succeed!
If you have questions or do not agree with the school’s decision, you can speak to your child's school administrator. You can also get help from South Dakota Parent Connection. Give us a call at (800) 640-4553 or send an email to sdpc@sdparent.org and an experienced Outreach Specialist can give you information and support to make sure you understand your rights and help ensure your child gets the services they need.
