Transition To Success

Is your teen ready for what is next after high school? As the future approaches, the transition into adulthood can be both exciting and challenging, especially for young adults with disabilities. We’re here to help make that journey smoother and more successful!

Join South Dakota Parent Connection for an upcoming training designed to equip both parents and young adults (ages 14-21) with the tools, resources, and strategies needed to confidently navigate the next phase of life. Whether it's understanding your changing role as a parent, building your teen’s self-advocacy skills, or connecting with the right support systems, this training is your guide to preparing for a bright future!

Here is what one parent said about the training they attended in 2023.

Off and Running

Now that your kids are back in school, supporting their success goes beyond just providing supplies. It’s about helping them manage stress, stay organized, and navigate challenges like homework frustrations and behavior control. Here’s how you can make a difference:

  1. Homework Help: Set aside a specific time each day for homework. Create a quiet, distraction-free zone where your child can focus. If they struggle, offer guidance rather than answers, encouraging them to think critically. Use positive reinforcement to keep them motivated.
  2. Organization Skills: Teach them how to use planners, calendars, or apps to track assignments and deadlines. Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps to prevent overwhelm, promoting a sense of accomplishment with each completed step.
  3. Managing Stress: Encourage your child to take short breaks during study sessions. Deep breathing exercises, light physical activity, or simply listening to music can help them recharge and regain focus.
  4. Impulse Control and Behavior: Set clear expectations and routines. Offer praise for positive behaviors and use calm redirection when impulses take over.

By staying involved and providing the right tools and support, you can help your child navigate the school year with confidence, reducing frustration and fostering a positive learning experience! If you have questions or concerns about how to best support your child, contact us and an experienced Outreach Specialist can discuss ideas and options for your family.
