from the ptsa president
Welcome to Saxon Country! On behalf of Langley High School’s Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), it is my pleasure to welcome back families to the 2023-2024 school year!

The PTSA works closely with teachers, students, and administrators to fund and support programs that enrich our students’ learning experience. For example, last year the PTSA purchased lab equipment, musical instruments and other classroom materials that enhanced the school curriculum. We also supported service and learning programs, such as Saxon Service and Science Olympiad for our students, as well as funded faculty professional development and improvements to common areas of our school. The PTSA cannot do any of this without the support and generosity of our Langley parents. You can support these programs by participating and volunteering at a PTSA event this year.

Participate by joining or renewing your PTSA membership. Your dues and donations help us fund and support programs at Langley that the FCPS budget alone cannot fund.

Participate by attending our General Membership Meetings where you will learn about the latest news and issues impacting our school and have a chance to participate in a question-and-answer session with Principal Greer. It is also a wonderful way to meet other Langley parents. Our first meeting will be held Tues, Sept 12, 5-6 pm, before Back to School Night. Look for additional information on the PTSA homepage and in future issues of the Langley eNews.

Volunteer once at a PTSA event this year. PTSA members will be involved in many activities throughout the school year such as: Tailgate Party on Fri, Sept 8, The Reflections Art Contest in October, Career Connections, and Ethics Day to name a few. Click here to learn about the different ways to get involved, many of which do not require a substantial amount of time. Whether you can share several hours of your day or only an hour, there is a volunteering opportunity that is just right for you.

Stay Informed by subscribing to our weekly newsletter eNews, which highlights important events in our community, or by visiting ptsalangley.org, which also contains helpful information and useful links.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I look forward to working with you this year! Hail Saxons!

~ Joy Hohenthaner, PTSA President

saxons, did you know ...
use for the Saxons did you know blurb. stays small on the mobile view.
Jen Zamzow, Ph.D from Psychology Today writes, “Have you ever started out the school year excited for all the memories you’ll make with your kids, only to find yourself barely hanging on by Christmas? What starts out feeling manageable somehow morphs into an endless cycle of activities and responsibilities and the never-ending taxi driving.”

Here are some tips on making the school year sustainable.

parenting essentials to start the year strong
The Safe Community Coalition, in partnership with the Temple Rodef Shalom, is proud to host the authors of Raising A Kid Who Can, an event that is sure to help parents - and kids - start the new school year off strong!

Learn from a child psychiatrist, a parent psychologist, and a child therapist who have spent years distilling the latest parenting science and best practices to answer the complex question: Based on all that modern science has to offer, what are the most important things I should try to do in raising my kid?

This meet the authors event takes place Wed, Sept 13 at Temple Rodef Shalom (2100 Westmoreland St.). The Presentation and Q&A is 7-8:30 pm with Book Signing immediately afterward. Books will be available for sale at the event.

More info and registration for this event can be found here.
school bus safety
Parents and student drivers! Take a few moments to review school bus safety here at the beginning of the school year.

Drivers must stop in both directions when a stopped school bus is loading or unloading children, unless separated from the bus by a median. When there is a median, all lanes of traffic following the bus must stop (see configuration 4 in the diagram). It is considered reckless driving - a criminal offense - if you pass a stopped school bus unloading children.

See more about back to school safety on the FCPS website. We all help students arrive at school and back home safely each day.
