With 2020 proving to be very challenging year for all, the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center regrettably must cancel the 2020 Alpena Community Day which is normally hosted during the Exercise Northern Strike. Read the official announcement from Lt. Col. Budd.

Two hundred twenty-seven students from the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan and its affiliate foundation service area have been awarded scholarships this year. To see a full list of 2020 scholarship recipients, or to learn more about scholarship opportunities offered through CFNEM, visit cfnem.org . Small Business Restart Grants

The Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $100 million program that will provide grants to small businesses around Michigan working to recover from the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 virus. Target Alpena, working through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, was allocated $3.5 million to distribute among our five county area – Alcona, Alpena, Cheboygan, Iosco and Presque Isle. The Michigan Small Business Restart Program application is NOW AVAILABLE at michiganbusiness.org/restart and will run through Wednesday, August 5. The max grant request is $20,000. Funds can be used as working capital to support payroll expenses, rent, mortgage payments, utility expenses or other similar expenses. Further information can be found at that same link. For questions regarding the application please call the MEDC Call Center at 888.522.0103. They are available Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
New Workplace Safety Resources

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) is offering a number of updated workplace safety resources for employers, including posters, videos, fact sheets and industry specific guidelines. They recently added downloadable signs for businesses, which work to make the new mask requirements clear to customers.  
Employers Reporting Issues with Unemployment Charges

Despite an Executive Order stating that employers should not be charged for any unemployment insurance benefits paid to claimants who were laid off or on a leave of absence due to COVID-19, many employers are reporting that these charges are starting to appear on their accounts. These improper charges should be carefully monitored, as they could impact the business’ 2021 UI tax rate.  Read more.
Workplace Safety Grants

With employers across the state working to keep their employees, customers and communities safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, the State of Michigan has launched the Michigan COVID-19 Safety Grant Program. These grants will provide small businesses matching funds of – up to $10,000 – to decrease the risk of COVID-19 spread through safety and health-related equipment purchased and training in response to COVID-19.
