Canadian vs. American Culture - When I shop for food, I read the labels. I want to know if my apples are Canadian. Many people are doing this. And yet, in our community, many people subscribe to American movie streaming services. The problem is not only economic - it is also cultural. No matter what the movie is about - movies sell culture - I want to encourage our community to keep our dollars and our culture local.

Learn Cross Country Skiing - Adult Group Lessons - Qualified instructors will teach up to eight students per group in four one-hour sessions in either Classic Ski or Skate Ski techniques. Using an inclusive and student-centred approach, instructors will teach the principals of balance, coordination, propulsion and direction change on flat to gentle uphill terrain. 6:00pm at 4638 Hwy 6.
$120 per four-lesson series and do not include trail fees. All participants must either be a member of Nelson Nordic Ski Club or pay for the additional trail fees.

Arts Grants - The Judy Wapp Art Fellowship Award is an annual arts award given to a self-identified artist to aid in said artist’s pursuing a specific project or change in direction of their art. The Fellowship recipients include, but are not limited to, young art students, as artists of all ages can benefit from financial assistance. Recipients must live within the boundaries of the RDCK. $2,000 will be awarded on April 20th (Judy’s Birthday), annually, until the funds are exhausted. Locked up: Jail'n'Bail raises money for local athletes - Locked up for local athletes: Over a dozen local business celebrities will be ‘jailed’ by Nelson Police for Polar Plunge® fundraiser
Witness Nelson Police officers in action as local leaders, business owners, and community champions are 'arrested' and held until they reach their bail at the Jail & Bail Fundraiser taking place this Thursday. The funds raised will support the upcoming Special Olympics Polar Plunge® at 12pm on Sunday, March 8 at Lakeside Park.
Taking place on Thursday, February 26, this light-hearted event will see volunteers ‘arrested’ and locked in a mock jail cell until they raise their assigned bail amount. Their only way out? Calling on friends, family, and colleagues to donate in support of local athletes participating in events throughout the year.

News Release - Pre-treated Organics Program extended - Nelson City Council expands Pre-treated Organics Program: Eligible residents are encouraged to sign up online for their FoodCycler. The City’s Pre-treated Organics Program will continue to expand in 2026 with the purchase of up to 1,000 additional FoodCyclers, made available to all interested and eligible Nelson households. Council approved a phased rollout at a special meeting on February 17, 2026, which will allow more residents to participate over time, and the City to enhance public education efforts and explore policies to support the program’s long-term success.

Media Release - Structure Fire - 600 Block Hwy 3A - At 2328 hours on February 22nd, 2026 Nelson Fire & Rescue Services responded to a report of Structure Fire on the 600 block of Hwy 3a. All on duty members responded immediately with 6 additional members responding from home.
Upon arrival of the first crew, smoke was observed coming from exterior windows. The Officer met with site personnel and learned the fire was in room #7 and all tenants had been evacuated. With this information, the first arriving crew’s primary objective was controlling fire growth from the exterior until additional members could arrive. Upon making entry for an interior attack and primary search, the team found the fire room and quickly finished knocked the fire down.

Police Respond to Smoke Report, Seize Weapons and Arrest Prohibited Driver - On February 10, 2026, at approximately 10:19 a.m., Nelson Police Department officers attended a residence in the 200 block of Victoria Street at the request of Nelson Fire Rescue following a report of smoke inside an apartment operating as a short-term rental.
Fire personnel located several adult males inside the residence who required assistance exiting, possibly due to drug intoxication. While exiting, one individual was observed operating a vehicle and was subsequently arrested for driving while prohibited.

Media Release - Nelson Farmers Market launches 2026 season - For the 2026 season, the Nelson Farmers Market team is maintaining the Wednesday Farmers Market location of the 600 Block of Baker Street and the Hall Street Plaza. While early-season planned construction in downtown Nelson may require a temporary relocation, the market will return to Baker Street when the work is completed.
Vendor applications for the 2026 Nelson Farmers Market season will open Sunday, March 1, with full application details shared on the City of Nelson website at nelson.ca/market. Community members are encouraged to follow the Nelson Farmers Market on social media and visit the City of Nelson website for the most up-to-date information.

Indigenous Grant Funding Initiatives - Shambhala Music Festival administers two annual funding initiatives: the Indigenous University Bursary Program, and the Indigenous Artist Grant Program.

The Annual Artist Grant is awarded to Indigenous visual or performance artists who wish to share their work with the Shambhala Farmily during our annual event. The total funding allocated for this program is $5000, divided between 2 successful applicants: Professional Artist Grant: $3500; Emerging Artist Grant: $1500.

The Indigenous University Bursary program provides non-repayable financial support for First Nations, Métis, or Inuit students who are currently enrolled in (or are applying for) a full-time university or college program in BC or Canada in the 2026/2027 academic year. The total funding allocated for this program is $5000, to be divided between up to 10 successful applicants.

The Nelson & District Arts Council (NDAC) aims to make the 38th annual ArtWalk another hit summer event for artists, local arts lovers, tourists, and local businesses. This year, NDAC is again asking business owners to consider becoming an ArtWalk venue to support the local arts community as well as beautify their walls. The event populates unique venues with quality, locally produced artwork chosen by the venue operator to fit their walls and business branding.

All work in the show can be put for sale at a 60/40 split between the artist and the museum, providing an excellent opportunity for emerging artists to sell their work, as well as support the museum’s exhibitions and programming.

Call for artist housing: summer residency - We're looking for housesitting / billeting options for three visiting artists in Nelson from July 1, 2026, to August 7, 2026. The three artists work primarily in textiles across their individual practices and as a collective. They will be engaged in their summer residency at Oxygen Art Centre during this time period. The artists will have 24/7 access to Oxygen's facility during the residency, so we're looking for cozy accommodations for the artists to find rest and to feel more embedded within the community. We're open to various options, including shared or individual accommodations for the artists. Partial durations for the six-week residency are also welcome. Parking for one vehicle will be required.
Honorariums will be offered to hosts in exchange for their generosity.

Your input wanted - Zoning Bylaw Update - With the recent approval of a new Official Community Plan (OCP) it's time to take a look at the City's Zoning Bylaw.
The purpose of the Zoning Bylaw review is to ensure the Bylaw is:
- aligned with the newly adopted Official Community Plan (OCP);
- up-to-date with recent provincial changes to planning and development rules; and
- easier for everyone to read, understand, and use.
Although it may sound like a big task, overall, there are very few major changes being considered; it's mostly a lot of minor changes. Based on past feedback from the public, City staff have identified multiples sections of the Bylaw that could benefit from a re-write to improve clarity and make it less complex.

Help Carla walk, hike and thrive again
Shota and Maya here. We’re reaching out to share an update on our mom, Carla Hutchinson, and to ask for some support for our parents during a really challenging time for our family.
As many of you know, our mom was recently diagnosed with a very rare cancerous tumor in her foot. This required her to have a below-knee amputation of her right leg on December 11th in Vancouver.
Although the surgery went well, it’s been a big adjustment for her. For the foreseeable future, our mom won’t be able to keep up with her practice at Crystal Creek Physiotherapy. It’s been especially tough because she genuinely loves her work and is so dedicated to her patients.
Since she isn’t able to work right now, our parents' income has taken a major hit just as the expenses are starting to add up—including medical travel, rehab, and the prosthetics she’ll need down the road. To get our mom back to the life she loves—including her passion for hiking and cross-country skiing—she will require an advanced prosthetic leg which costs between $15,000–$20,000. This does not include the cost of the specialized rehab she will require or the fact that these prosthetics need to be replaced every 3–5 years for the rest of her life.

"Our amazing friends Robyn Lamb and Andrew Purtill are going through something no one ever expects to face. Andrew has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive sinonasal cancer, and next week he’ll be heading to Vancouver for major surgery to remove the tumour. The surgery will mean the loss of one of his eyes, and he’ll need at least three months to recover and adjust to this huge change.
Anyone who knows Robyn and Andy knows how full of love and kindness they are. They’re the kind of people who have always shown up for everyone else, and now they really need us to show up for them.
While Andrew recovers, Robyn won’t be able to work so she can focus on being there to support him through healing, appointments, and their new normal. This GoFundMe is to help them cover rent, bills, groceries, and travel costs while they get through the next few months.

"Over the coming month+ I will be in need of financial support while I recover from, of all things, brain surgery.
The good news is my affliction isn't cancerous, and, though not without risks, surgery should bring complete resolution.
Two and a half years ago I learned I have a wee guest growing under the left side of my brain - a mischievous tangle of veins called a meningioma that's now pressing on important bits.
Since December I've experienced significant numbness and tingling on the left side of my face and scalp, and in recent months, also pain. Without intervention it will continue to grow and lead to more serious issues, so I've elected to have surgery.
The procedure will happen Oct 15 at Vancouver General Hospital. My dad, David, is kindly chauffeuring me down and back. The surgery will take 7-8 hours and I'll spend 5 nights in hospital. After I'm discharged on the 20th, we'll spend a few more nights in the Lower Mainland with friends (thank you Broadheads and Nicola H. :) and then attempt the long drive home.
It is a major surgery, but I'm otherwise quite healthy, so I expect to fully recover in 5-8 weeks. But during that time I won't be able to work in my new capacity as an Education Assistant or manage my normal level of arts activity. As well, I will incur travel and medical expenses. Hence this call for support.
I'm very grateful to Jennie Barron for offering to set this up, and I thank you for any support you're able to offer, however modest.

There’s something very unusual about the northeast corner of Vernon Street in Nelson: it’s the only place in town that I know of where four separate buildings have stood. The first was the Grand Central Hotel, built in 1897 and greatly expanded the following year. Although it was a large building, for some reason photos of it are hard to come by.

It refers to the “undead” or a living yet dead person alongside stereotypes associated with porcelain concerning East Asian identities and feminine beauty.

Volunteer Opportunity - We’re currently seeking volunteer dishwashers to support our Community Meal programs!
Every Tuesday at our Gathering Table, and every other Wednesday during the Good Food Bank, our Community Meal Program offers delicious, nutritious, and culturally diverse meals that bring people together to share food and connect. We serve balanced, affordable dishes - often made with the same ingredients available through our food bank - to support food security and build community.
