Media Release - Nelson's Green Home and Energy Show returns this spring - The City of Nelson is hosting the eighth Green Home and Energy Show this spring, a free community expo focused on home energy efficiency and clean transportation.

Residents from across the Central Kootenays are invited to attend the Green Home and Energy Show: Spring Expo on Wednesday, April 15, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Nelson Prestige Lakeside Resort, 701 Lakeside Drive. Part of Earth Days programming, this event is free and open to the public.

As the City moves forward with the Nelson Next Climate Plan, reducing emissions from homes and transportation remains a key priority. These sectors are the largest sources of local greenhouse gas emissions, but they also offer significant opportunities to improve affordability, comfort, and resilience for residents. The Green Home and Energy Show helps turn climate goals into practical action by connecting residents with programs, technologies, and local experts who can support energy-saving and low-carbon choices at home.

Feedback Wanted - Seeking your feedback: New Service and Policy Complaint Process - The Nelson Police Board is currently refining our new Policy on Service and Policy Complaints and we recognize that this policy only works if it is transparent, accessible, and trusted by the community it serves.

While we are eager for your input, it is important to note that certain core elements of this policy, such as specific reporting timelines, oversight requirements and Board options, are mandated by the Police Act. While they provide the legal framework we must follow, they also serve as the foundation for the more flexible, community-facing aspects of the policy.

We are looking for candid feedback on the "human" side of this policy. Specifically:

Accessibility: Is the language clear? Are the methods for submitting a complaint inclusive and easy to find? Barriers: Are there any perceived hurdles in the draft that might discourage someone from coming forward?

Public Notice - FireSmart Yard Clean Up Burn Period Until May 17 - With spring upon us, now is a great time to reduce the risk of wildfire around your property. In order to make it easier for folks to get rid of collected wildfire fuels such as woody debris, fallen branches and low hanging limbs, the Fire Chief has authorized a backyard burn period within the City of Nelson. From now until May 17th 2026 (weather permitting), residents can obtain a permit to burn these fuels in their backyards. Here's what to do:

Visit the Nelson Fire Hall with a copy of your current home insurance and $10 cash or cheque.
Each day that you wish to burn, you must call the Fire Hall at 250-352-3103 to register your burn and obtain daily authorization.

Restrictions apply, so please review the details at:

If you miss the burn window, or want another option to dispose of your collected wildfire fuels and yard waste, you can also dump eligible* yard waste for free during the month of May at the Grohman Transfer Station.

Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program - The City of Nelson and its Cultural Development Committee are pleased to announce the Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program. This program displays art by local and regional artists within the City’s indoor public spaces, promoting and reflecting the creative nature of Nelson.

“This program is a wonderful way to both support our talented and diverse pool of artists and bring a vibrancy to our City Hall, affirming the City’s commitment to supporting arts, culture and heritage,” says CDC Chair Sydney Black.

The deadline for submissions is May 22, 2026. Applicants are asked to provide electronic images of their pieces, along with the medium, dimensions, value and artist bio. All artwork must be suitably framed and ready for hanging.

Submissions will be adjudicated by the CDC’s Public Art Working Group, and the accepted works will be installed in June 2026.

The traditional April 22 Earth Day celebration was expanded last year to Earth Week, featuring 25 events involving 1000 participants and hundreds of volunteer hours over the week. This year Earth Days will take place over the whole month of April.

Call for artist housing: summer residency - We're looking for housesitting / billeting options for three visiting artists in Nelson from July 1, 2026, to August 7, 2026. The three artists work primarily in textiles across their individual practices and as a collective. They will be engaged in their summer residency at Oxygen Art Centre during this time period. The artists will have 24/7 access to Oxygen's facility during the residency, so we're looking for cozy accommodations for the artists to find rest and to feel more embedded within the community. We're open to various options, including shared or individual accommodations for the artists. Partial durations for the six-week residency are also welcome. Parking for one vehicle will be required.

Honorariums will be offered to hosts in exchange for their generosity.

Fundraising Opportunity and Celebration of the lives of Detective Wade Tittemore and Constable Mathieu Nolet - Nelson Police Department Memorial Run/Walk. 5K Run/Walk; 10K Run & 1K Kids Fun Run - This community event brings together runners, walkers, families, friends and supporters to raise funds for a scholarship in their name, awarded to a deserving LV Rogers student. The 1K is a fun kids run. The 5K run/walk is along the waterfront. The 10K run has rolling hills but ends in a fast, flat finish. This distance is chip timed.

Shota and Maya here. We’re reaching out to share an update on our mom, Carla Hutchinson, and to ask for some support for our parents during a really challenging time for our family.

As many of you know, our mom was recently diagnosed with a very rare cancerous tumor in her foot. This required her to have a below-knee amputation of her right leg on December 11th in Vancouver.

Although the surgery went well, it’s been a big adjustment for her. For the foreseeable future, our mom won’t be able to keep up with her practice at Crystal Creek Physiotherapy. It’s been especially tough because she genuinely loves her work and is so dedicated to her patients.

Since she isn’t able to work right now, our parents' income has taken a major hit just as the expenses are starting to add up—including medical travel, rehab, and the prosthetics she’ll need down the road. To get our mom back to the life she loves—including her passion for hiking and cross-country skiing—she will require an advanced prosthetic leg which costs between $15,000–$20,000. This does not include the cost of the specialized rehab she will require or the fact that these prosthetics need to be replaced every 3–5 years for the rest of her life.

Andrew has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive sinonasal cancer, and next week he’ll be heading to Vancouver for major surgery to remove the tumour. The surgery will mean the loss of one of his eyes, and he’ll need at least three months to recover and adjust to this huge change.

Anyone who knows Robyn and Andy knows how full of love and kindness they are. They’re the kind of people who have always shown up for everyone else, and now they really need us to show up for them.

While Andrew recovers, Robyn won’t be able to work so she can focus on being there to support him through healing, appointments, and their new normal. This GoFundMe is to help them cover rent, bills, groceries, and travel costs while they get through the next few months.

GoFundMe - Community Outreach for Nelson's Most Vulnerable: As a community of men this winter, we’ve been showing up consistently for people in Nelson who need it most.

Families grieving the loss of fathers to suicide and overdose.

The homeless population of our streets, living in the cold.
People who are struggling quietly and often forgotten.
We’ve brought hot meals and drinks, warm clothing, and simple human presence.
We’ve shared stew, chili and hot chocolate on cold days.
We’ve handed out toques, mitts, jackets, dental essentials, socks, underwear, and more.

And every time, something shifts. In them, and in us. The frequency grows, and more men get involved. Right now, we’re raising funds to directly support these outreaches: food, clothing, and essential supplies for people in Nelson who need care, warmth, and connection. We are not a charity or NGO. There are no overhead or admin costs.

100% of donations go directly to helping people.

We are simply a group of local men, Nelson Men’s Group, who have spent years doing deep inner work together. This work has shaped us into men who show up: for our families, for each other, and for our broader community in need.

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history.

The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.
