City moves to Stage 2 Water Restrictions

Effective Friday, August 7, the City of Nelson is implementing Stage 2 Water Restrictions throughout the municipality to help protect Nelson's drinking water supply as hot, dry weather continues.

Lawns may only be watered between 4–9 a.m. and 7–10 p.m.
Even-numbered addresses: Wednesdays only
Odd-numbered addresses: Thursdays only
Gardens, trees and shrubs may be watered during permitted hours on any day using a handheld hose with a shut-off nozzle, sprinkler or drip irrigation.
Watering new sod or seeded lawns is not permitted without a permit from Public Works.
Washing sidewalks, driveways and exterior building surfaces is prohibited.

Fundraiser - Cinnamon Bun Ride

The Procter Village Café hosts its annual Cinnamon Bun Ride as part of a fundraiser for the Procter Community Society and the old Schoolhouse grounds. The café will donate $2 per rider arriving on two human-powered wheels during the event. A raffle for an e-bike and other prizes is also part of the fundraiser.

Fishing Derby - Castlegar Invasive Fishout

This fall Castlegar will host the Invasive Species Fishout Derby on the Columbia River. The intent is to catch as many walleye (Regional Guidelines) and northern pike as possible because both species were introduced to the waters here and are detrimental to the native species of trout, Kokanee, and others.

You Tour! - Cold War Bunker Tour

During the height of the Cold War, in the 1950s and 1960s, nearly 50 bunkers were constructed across Canada. In 2017, the Nelson Museum began work on restoring the space and opening it to the public. You can join a tour of one of the Museumʼs best-loved spaces! From iodine pills and Geiger counters to board games and ashtrays, visitors get a glimpse of the vast measures taken to create normalcy in an extraordinary time.

Interior Health has confirmed that the Trail Health Centre Laboratory will remain open permanently, continuing outpatient laboratory services in downtown Trail. The decision follows engagement with community leaders, patients, physicians and staff. Wildfire Information Bulletin - August 12, 2026

There are currently no Evacuation Alerts or Orders in the RDCK. The Emergency Operations Centre reports 46 wildfires in the Southeast Fire Centre, including 21 listed as out of control. Four area restrictions are in place within the RDCK. Smoky conditions are primarily from fires in Washington and Idaho, along with fires within the Southeast Fire Centre. Residents are encouraged to stay prepared and follow official wildfire information as conditions can change quickly.

Off-Road Vehicle Use Prohibited on Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail and at Glacier Creek Regional Park - In response to current wildfire conditions, recreational off-road vehicle use is prohibited on the Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail and at Glacier Creek Regional Park, effective immediately. The RDCK is following the Province's prohibition on recreational off-road vehicle use on Crown land throughout the Southeast Fire Centre. The RDCK restriction will remain in place until the provincial prohibition is lifted.

Recreational off-road vehicles are prohibited on Crown land throughout the Southeast Fire Centre. The restriction is intended to protect public safety during elevated wildfire danger and remains in place until noon October 9, 2026, unless rescinded earlier.

Media Release - Hall and Baker Fire

At 1249 hours on August 11, 2026, Nelson Fire & Rescue Services responded to a report of a structure fire in the 500 block of Hall Street. Both on-duty firefighters responded immediately, along with both Chief Officers.

The fire was contained to the building of origin. Although there was some damage to an adjacent four-plex, a Building Code-compliant exterior sprinkler system and fire-rated wall assembly significantly limited fire spread. As a result, damage was comparatively minor and tenants were able to return home later that evening.

On June 30, 2026, Nelson Hydro applied to the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Project (Project) in its rural service area. The Project will replace Nelson Hydro’s existing Automated Meter Reading system with modern advanced meters and associated communications, data management and system integration capabilities. The BCUC has established a public and transparent proceeding to review the application.

In accordance with BCUC’s Rules of Practice and Procedure, any party wishing to comment on the Application is invited to submit a Letter of Comment by the date established in the regulatory timetable. Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FOKLSS), in collaboration with Kootenay Lake Partnership, is hosting a series of five workshops for shoreline owners and residents across the Kootenay Lake region this August.

The workshops are part of the Shoreline Homeowner Project, an initiative which aims to provide practical, accessible techniques for homeowners, recreational users and community members to be part of promoting the health of the lake that we all share. Sessions will be held in Kaslo, Harrop, Crawford Bay, Creston and Nelson this August and September.

Hosted in partnership with the Kootenay Lake Partnership and developed with guidance from Yaqan Nukiy, these workshops will cover practical topics like maintaining natural shorelines, reducing erosion, supporting native plants, improving water quality, and managing invasive species.

Media Release - Suspended Fund/Pay-it-Forward fund at Wait's on Nelson Needs our Help! If someone has money to contribute to the suspended fund, they contribute. Sometimes this is 50 cents, sometimes it is $50. Any and all contributions are welcomed. When someone is hungry/tired/needs a break from the elements, and not able to pay, they can access the suspended fund to cover the cost of their meal or a muffin or a hot cup of coffee. Wait's on Nelson currently serves approximately 15 suspended meals per day - more on weekends. That's in the 420 meals per month range!

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history. The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

Tonewood is a wellbeing concert with immersive cinematic imagery exploring the origins of the violin in the spruce forests of Northern Italy and our connection with the natural world.

Created by violinist and Certified Forest Therapy Guide Natasha Hall, the project follows the journey of a spruce tree from seed, to forest, to instrument and resonance. Through live music, film, and sensory elements, Tonewood explores the relationship between nature, music, and human well-being.

Traffic lights come to Nelson

When did traffic lights first appear in West Kootenay? That is, of the red-amber-green variety. I am guessing they showed up in Nelson before anywhere else, although I stand to be corrected. Traffic lights were first suggested in Nelson almost 13 years before they were installed. The earliest mention I can find is in the Daily News of June 22, 1940 when the local Board of Trade (the old name for the Chamber of Commerce) asked city council to consider them. But nothing more was heard on the subject until 1947, when council discussed a police commission recommendation to install lights at Baker and Ward, and Baker and Stanley. Later that year, Norman Stibbs made traffic lights part of his unsuccessful election campaign for mayor. (Stibbs had previously served as mayor from 1938-46.)

This wonderful wolverine was caught on trail camera in May of 2026 near Castlegar, British Columbia. They are currently blue listed with populations of only 3000 to 4000 left in the wild of BC. For context, there are 15,000 grizzly bears, 150,000 black bears and over 5.5 million humans in British Columbia.

The Nelson Museum, Archives, & Gallery is both an art gallery and history museum with an extensive regional archive.

The Death Card by Robin Wiltse - a Canadian fibre artist, living near Kaslo, working in wool. With a love of colour and texture, she uses a single needle to manipulate the fibres into rich and detailed images. Robin’s current work is often inspired by botanical folklore. Looking into the ways that historical botany, myth and legend have tried to explain the mysteries of life and death through healing, ritual and magic.

COLLAGE featuring artists Angela Grossmann, Geoffrey Farmer, Tim Moore, Brendan Fernandes, Blair Brennan, Anna Binta Diallo, Maggie Groat and Tanya Pixie Johnson is the sixth in a series of group exhibitions. These medium-centric group exhibitions are ... a means of supporting a wide range of artists from across a vast cultural and geographic landscape and fostering critical dialogue and illustrating the diversity of creative expression, methodology, politics, empowerment, and innovation, amongst other considerations.

More than an aesthetic object, the installation celebrates the resilience and beauty of natural materials grown and processed within our bioregion. It reflects the connections between art, land stewardship, and sustainable fibre systems, offering a moment of quiet reflection. Through linen, the work asks us to reconsider the role of natural fibres in contemporary life and to recognize cloth not as something separate from land, labour, or ecology, but as an expression of relationship.

Beauty Follows Rage - In this exhibit, the Deb Borsos has used her experiences of working before, during and after natural disasters across the province, to explore how nature continues to eternally rebuild and create beauty in a variety of ways.
Wildfires have an impact that goes beyond the expected. Petra Hekkenberg is a visual artist and designer who has been living in New Denver, since 2015. The Art of Safe Keeping exhibition and book are a testament to struggle, courage, resilience, and kindness. It offers people an opportunity to process emotions, gain understanding, and to feel understood; all through the power of art.

Health & Wellness Resource - "BridgeCare BC Provides timely access to virtual appointments with a general physician. We provide limited medical services via phone and video visits to patients who are either pending a family physician, or when one is unavailable to them."

If you are a resident of British Columbia with a valid Medical Services Plan (MSP) account, your virtual visits are fully covered at no out-of-pocket cost.

From The Canadian Cancer Society

Volunteer drivers in the Nelson area for The Canadian Cancer Society. All rides are local or nearby.

From West Kootenay Nav-CARE

Volunteer Navigators are paired one to one with adults living with chronic illness, increased frailty or social isolation to support them with their social, emotional, and practical needs. Expect to spend 4 to 8 hours a month volunteering, Volunteer-client pairs commit to at least a 6 month relationship.

From Special Olympics BC –

Special Olympics BC-Nelson is always welcoming athletes and volunteers. We currently offer 5-pin bowling, swimming, snowshoeing, bocce, and floor hockey, also Alpine skiing. We are actively seeking volunteers to join our Local Committee, as well as coaches and program volunteers for all of our sports.

Volunteer as a Firefighter - No previous experience is necessary, volunteers train to professional standards. The RDCK has 16 volunteer fire departments and 17 fire halls in the central kootenays.

Volunteer firefighters commit to a minimum 2 hours a week of training at their local fire hall.
