Stage 2 Water Conservation Measures in effect for Woodland Heights and Riondel Water System

Nelson, BC: Effective immediately, the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) has implemented mandatory Stage 2 Water Conservation Measures in the Woodland Heights Water System, located in the subdivision of Taghum, approximately 15 km southwest of Nelson in Electoral Area F.

These measures have been implemented due to high water consumption resulting in continuous operation of the well pump and reduced reservoir levels.

City of Nelson implementing Stage 1 Water Restrictions

What does this mean for residents?

Water lawns only between 4-9am and 7-10pm.
Even numbered addresses water on Wednesdays and Saturdays only.
Odd numbered addresses water on Tuesdays and Sundays only.
You can still water trees, shrubs, and gardens at any time using a shut off nozzle or drip irrigation.

Sprinklers and irrigation systems for gardens, trees & shrubs can be used between 4–9 a.m. and 7–10 p.m. on any day.

Pre-registering now will reduce wait times at evacuee reception centre and ensure people receive the support they need quicker

As of 2:45 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, there were 1,200 properties under evacuation order and 6,400 properties under evacuation alert in British Columbia: evacuation numbers are considered approximate as conditions evolve.

Media Release - Preparing for Extreme Heat

Cooling Centres

During prolonged or severe heat events, the City of Nelson may activate cooling centres. Cooling centres are activated based on weather conditions and public health risk, typically when temperatures reach daytime highs of 35 and nighttime temps of 18 for at least two consecutive days.

When activated, residents will be able to cool down, rest, access drinking water, electrolytes, and escape the heat at the following locations:

ANKORS
Nelson Public Library
Ascension Lutheran Church

If they are activated, the City will share hours of operation, and any updates through the City of Nelson website and social media channels.

The first ArtWalk 2026 opening was a great success, even with a bit of rain; it couldn’t dampen the art-lovers' experience. Along with the visual art on the walls, there was punk rock music at the museum, paint-splatter tarot reading at Remedy Rx, wandering entertainers, and music at multiple other venues. This year, the second ArtWalk opening is on Friday, July 31st from 6 -9pm. There will be many new artists on display in different venues around town.

During the height of the Cold War, in the 1950s and 1960s, nearly 50 bunkers were constructed across Canada. In 2017, the Nelson Museum began work on restoring the space and opening it to the public. From iodine pills and Geiger counters to board games and ashtrays, visitors get a glimpse of the vast measures taken to create normalcy in an extraordinary time.

Media Release - Oxygen Welcomes Queer Textile Artists For Summer Residency - "Three Way Mirror"

Oxygen Art Centre excitedly announces their summer residency program with artist collective, Three Way Mirror, from July 3, 2026, to August 7, 2026. Three Way Mirror is composed of artists Daniel Barrow (QC), Glenn Gear (QC), and Paige Gratland (BC). The artists visit Nelson from Montréal and Vancouver for a six-week residency where they will develop their textile practices individually and collectively in what they call a craft ‘triangle’.

The public are invited to attend two informal open studio events during the residency period to engage with the artists and encounter works-in-progress. Open studio events are scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Admission is free. Everyone welcome to attend.

Workshop - Kaslo Shoreline Homeowner Workshop

Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FOKLSS), in collaboration with Kootenay Lake Partnership, is hosting a series of five workshops for shoreline owners and residents across the Kootenay Lake region this August.

The workshops are part of the Shoreline Homeowner Project, an initiative which aims to provide practical, accessible techniques for homeowners, recreational users and community members to be part of promoting the health of the lake that we all share. Sessions will be held in Kaslo, Harrop, Crawford Bay, Creston and Nelson this August and September.

Hosted in partnership with the Kootenay Lake Partnership and developed with guidance from Yaqan Nukiy, these workshops will cover practical topics like maintaining natural shorelines, reducing erosion, supporting native plants, improving water quality, and managing invasive species.

A total of 85 venues, located in communities and rural areas throughout the Columbia Basin, are featured in the 18th annual tour, taking place on Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Media Release - Dutch Elm survey in Nelson Aug 3-4

On August 3 and 4, crews from Living Tree Environmental Ltd. will be in Nelson surveying elm trees for Dutch Elm Disease (DED) as part of a regional monitoring program.

DED is caused by two species of fungus that is transmitted from infected elm trees to healthy elm trees by several species of elm bark beetles. Survey crews will identify elm trees on both public and private property and visually assess elm trees for symptoms, which include yellowing and wilting foliage. Small branches from symptomatic elm trees will be collected where possible for testing.

News Release - Paving in Fairview neighbourhood

The City of Nelson is advising the public of upcoming paving work in the Fairview neighbourhood.

The paving is scheduled to begin Tuesday, August 4 and is expected to take approximately two weeks. Sidewalk and curb repairs have already begun, and crews are currently on site. Work will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Please expect periodic road closures and single-lane traffic control throughout the project. On-street parking will be prohibited, and pedestrian access will be managed by traffic control crews.

Media Release - City of Nelson to replace forcemain with $7 million grant

The City of Nelson has secured $7 million in federal and provincial funding to replace the aging forcemain that carries wastewater from the city to the Grohman Narrows Treatment Plant. The funding, awarded through the Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) Strategic Priorities Fund, will help the City replace critical infrastructure that has reached the end of its service life while reducing the financial burden on local taxpayers.

Media release - City updates Anderson Creek water diversion procedure

The City of Nelson has strengthened monitoring and operating procedures for Anderson Creek following an environmental assessment into an accidental dewatering event that occurred during emergency water system repairs in August 2025.

The assessment identified two sections of Anderson Creek where water naturally flows underground during low-flow conditions. It found that these underground losses can significantly reduce stream flows downstream of the City's water intake during periods of low water availability.

News release - Salmo RCMP seek public assistance in locating Kayla Boisvert

Update: Salmo RCMP seek public assistance in locating Kayla Boisvert

Salmo RCMP continue efforts to locate Kayla Boisvert, who was reported missing on July 28, 2026, from the Shambhala Music Festival. RCMP and festival organizers have been working closely together since the outset of this investigation. On July 29, Search and Rescue attended the festival grounds to assist with search efforts. There has been significant sharing of information on social media; however, it remains important that anyone with firsthand information contact police directly and not rely solely on social media posts. On July 30, a tip was received that led investigators to a confirmed sighting of Kayla on July 29, 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m. south of Salmo, BC. Investigators are releasing photos from that sighting to provide the public with updated images of what Kayla was wearing, in the hope of locating her.

Media Release - Nelson Overall Crime Severity Index (CSI) down 26.3% from 2024

NPD is pleased to announce that Nelson’s CSI is down 26.3% from 112.0 in 2024 to 82.6 currently.

“These are notable decreases in the CSI numbers for the City of Nelson and can be attributed to several factors. There have been internal directives put in place to increase officer presence and time out in the community, especially in identified problem areas. This, coupled with some increased staffing, crime reduction strategies and provincially funded pilot projects the department was able to successfully lobby to be included in, has translated into positive results." - Chief Constable Donovan Fisher

Throughout the week, officers responded to a wide variety of incidents, including assaults, domestic disputes, thefts, fraud investigations, suspicious circumstances, traffic incidents, impaired driving, mental health-related calls, wellbeing checks, property investigations, and requests for assistance from members of the public and partner agencies.

Highlights from the week include:

Officers responded to reports of multiple thefts at businesses and residential locations throughout the city.
Police investigated several fraud complaints, reminding residents to remain vigilant against scams and to verify unexpected requests for money or personal information.
Traffic enforcement continued throughout the week, with officers responding to several motor vehicle incidents, including a hit-and-run collision and an impaired driving investigation that lead to a 3-month prohibition and vehicle impound
Police also investigated reports of mischief, suspicious persons, and suspicious circumstances while maintaining proactive patrols in neighbourhoods and the downtown core.

Article - State of the Basin - Tracking Basin Traffic Trends - Summer brings two inevitable shifts on roads in the Columbia Basin-Boundary Region: tourism and roadwork. Both tend to raise traffic as a top-of-mind issue for drivers, cyclists, and others travelling throughout the region. It seems like our roads are getting busier every year, but is that really the case? Traffic data available through the State of the Basin helps us understand seasonal patterns and year-over-year changes in the regional transportation network.

Across all stations with complete data, traffic volumes increased by 13% over the last decade (2015 to 2025), and 9% over the last three years (2022 to 2025). Recent decreases occurred in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2023, the worst wildfire season in BC’s recorded history.

This course is open to everyone, and is offered free of charge through a partnership with Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC). If you are a non-Indigenous learner we ask that you review these reflections prior to the first session.

Southern Michif is a traditional language of the Métis people. It is also known as Michif, Michif Cree, Heritage Michif, aan Cree, and aañ Crii. Participants will have the opportunity to delve into the rich Métis heritage and acquire fundamental Michif language skills. Led by a traditional Michif speaker Marie Schoenthal, this workshop promises an immersive experience that celebrates and preserves Métis culture.

Media Release - Suspended Fund/Pay-it-Forward fund at Wait's on Nelson Needs our Help! If someone has money to contribute to the suspended fund, they contribute. Sometimes this is 50 cents, sometimes it is $50. Any and all contributions are welcomed. When someone is hungry/tired/needs a break from the elements, and not able to pay, they can access the suspended fund to cover the cost of their meal or a muffin or a hot cup of coffee. Wait's on Nelson currently serves approximately 15 suspended meals per day - more on weekends. That's in the 420 meals per month range!

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history. The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

Ross Steed and Friends | 1993 - Ross Steed and friends perform original songs in a debut performance at the David Thompson Student Society Sub-Pub venue located at 711 Tenth Street in Nelson.

Songs performed include "Step by Step"; "Strangely Born" by Nelson musician Jocelyn McGillivray who had died on March 2, 1993; "White Fist"; "Rescue Me" and "Dark Eyes". Ross is joined by Cliff Maddix (guitar), Chris Shearman (bass), Rick Lingard (drums) and Greg Kozac (keyboard).

Kaslo Jazz Festival | August 2, 1992 Raw footage of performances from part of the first Kaslo Jazz Festival held in 1992.

The first performers features are the "Lester Quitzau Band" featuring Lester on vocals and guitar, Farley Scott on bass and Scott Anderson the drums. The band perform perform jazz and blues numbers. Fuego and Watersign. The next performer is "Fuego"; a Latin jazz and salsa band from Spokane. They are followed by Spokane jazz band "Watersign" features group founder Gary Edighoffer (saxophone), Joe Brasch on guitar, Rick Westrick on drums, Oscar De La Rousa on congas drums, Clipper Anderson on bass, Mike Rosenthal on keyboard, Jilla Roberts on vocals. Call It What It Is: A Video about Relationships, Made with and for Students | 1999

A documentary produced by Jan Inglis about dating relationships and abuse in dating relationships narrated by Aspen Switzer and Ian Wood. It is the result of a participatory project done with schools in the West Kootenays. The documentary features interviews with students, dance, music and dramatizations.

Participants include Lyndsay Siegler (Counsellor), Ron Schwartz (Men's Group Co-Facilitator) Lena Horswill (Executive Director, Nelson Community Services Centre). Dance scene with Shana Harris, Suzy Tacon; cafe scene with Cath Bouillet, Meghan Hicks, Mellissa Yates; couples scene with Jennie Newman, Brandon Flanagan; truck scene with Eli Bergevin, Patrick Clohessy. Students taking part were from Lucerne Elementary Secondary School of New Denver; LV Rogers High School in Nelson; Mt. Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan; On-Line Learning Alternative School; Stanley Humphries Secondary School in Castlegar and Trafalgar Junior Secondary School in Nelson.

Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery, 502 Vernon St.

The Nelson Museum, Archives, & Gallery is both an art gallery and history museum with an extensive regional archive.

The Death Card by Robin Wiltse - a Canadian fibre artist, living near Kaslo, working in wool. With a love of colour and texture, she uses a single needle to manipulate the fibres into rich and detailed images. Robin’s current work is often inspired by botanical folklore. Looking into the ways that historical botany, myth and legend have tried to explain the mysteries of life and death through healing, ritual and magic.

COLLAGE featuring artists Angela Grossmann, Geoffrey Farmer, Tim Moore, Brendan Fernandes, Blair Brennan, Anna Binta Diallo, Maggie Groat and Tanya Pixie Johnson is the sixth in a series of group exhibitions. These medium-centric group exhibitions are ... a means of supporting a wide range of artists from across a vast cultural and geographic landscape and fostering critical dialogue and illustrating the diversity of creative expression, methodology, politics, empowerment, and innovation, amongst other considerations.

Nelson textile artist Jane Merks is the NPL's July ArtWalk artist. With a rich background in graphic design and book arts, Jane’s ArtWalk exhibition will explore landscape through naturally dyed textiles, embroidery, and modern quilting. Her work embraces soft, earth-derived colours and a spirit of experimentation, letting go of precision in favour of texture, imperfection, and discovery.

NPL's August ArtWalk artist is local artist Faith Welsh. With over four decades of artistic exploration, Faith’s mixed-media work combines handmade collage, custom pigments, and bold colour to create intuitive pieces inspired by the Kootenay landscape and her inner world. Her exhibition invites viewers into a journey of awe, transformation, and discovery.

Oxygen Art Centre, 320 Vernon St.

Oxygen Art Centre is an artist-run centre located on the tum xula7xw of the sn̓ʕay̓ckstx (otherwise known as Nelson BC). Oxygen Art Centre is a rural artist-run centre that nurtures contemporary professional practices while engaging the wider community through multi-disciplinary programming.

Three Way Mirror by Daniel Barrow, Glenn Gear, Paige Gratland. Artist collective from Montréal and Vancouver for a six-week residency where they will develop their textile practices individually and collectively in what they call a craft ‘triangle’. Traditionally, a craft circle is a non-competitive circle of production where artists can create work and act on their concern for social justice. Three Way Mirror embraces this concept through a craft triangle where the artists create an intersectional queer space for textiles production and dialogue.
The public are invited to attend two informal open studio events during the residency period to engage with the artists and encounter works-in-progress. Open studio events are scheduled for Saturday July 18, and Saturday August 1, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Admission is free. Everyone welcome to attend.

Ecology of Cloth by West Kootenay Fibreshed Artist Collective: Danielle Soucie + Tracy Fillion. Raw Linen, Hand processed, Locally grown. This story begins in the soils of Argenta. More than an aesthetic object, the installation celebrates the resilience and beauty of natural materials grown and processed within our bioregion. It reflects the connections between art, land stewardship, and sustainable fibre systems, offering a moment of quiet reflection. Through linen, the work asks us to reconsider the role of natural fibres in contemporary life and to recognize cloth not as something separate from land, labour, or ecology, but as an expression of relationship.

Over 30 established and emerging fibre artists from across our country interpret to what it means to be Canadian, and to be an artist in Canada.

The Langham galleries display exhibits by professional artists from across Canada as well as talented regional emerging artists, local community and student group shows, and special cultural exhibits.

Beauty Follows Rage - In this exhibit, the Deb Borsos has used her experiences of working before, during and after natural disasters across the province, to explore how nature continues to eternally rebuild and create beauty in a variety of ways.
Wildfires have an impact that goes beyond the expected. Petra Hekkenberg is a visual artist and designer who has been living in New Denver, since 2015. The Art of Safe Keeping exhibition and book are a testament to struggle, courage, resilience, and kindness. It offers people an opportunity to process emotions, gain understanding, and to feel understood; all through the power of art.

Health & Wellness Resource - "BridgeCare BC Provides timely access to virtual appointments with a general physician. We provide limited medical services via phone and video visits to patients who are either pending a family physician, or when one is unavailable to them."

If you are a resident of British Columbia with a valid Medical Services Plan (MSP) account, your virtual visits are fully covered at no out-of-pocket cost.

Volunteer Drivers Needed - Make a big impact with just a little time. Help local seniors get to appointments, run errands, and stay connected.

From The Canadian Cancer Society

Volunteer drivers in the Nelson area for The Canadian Cancer Society. All rides are local or nearby.

From West Kootenay Nav-CARE

Volunteer Navigators are paired one to one with adults living with chronic illness, increased frailty or social isolation to support them with their social, emotional, and practical needs. Expect to spend 4 to 8 hours a month volunteering, Volunteer-client pairs commit to at least a 6 month relationship.

From Special Olympics BC –

Special Olympics BC-Nelson is always welcoming athletes and volunteers. We currently offer 5-pin bowling, swimming, snowshoeing, bocce, and floor hockey, also Alpine skiing. We are actively seeking volunteers to join our Local Committee, as well as coaches and program volunteers for all of our sports.

Volunteer as a Firefighter - No previous experience is necessary, volunteers train to professional standards. The RDCK has 16 volunteer fire departments and 17 fire halls in the central kootenays.

Volunteer firefighters commit to a minimum 2 hours a week of training at their local fire hall.
