Media Release - Nelson Celebrates the FIFA World Cup™ with soccer, music, and community events -
Nelson is joining communities across Canada in celebrating the FIFA World Cup™ with four days of soccer, music, and community events. To welcome residents and visitors from across the region, all West Kootenay Transit routes will be free throughout the day, including service from Selkirk College in Castlegar to Kaslo, and Nakusp. The festivities beginning on June 24 will feature live match viewing, family-friendly activities, sponsor and skills booths, food vendors, and a beer garden. The celebration continues with Nelson Soccer Days, running June 24–28 and transforming downtown Nelson into a hub of activity with live music, match watch parties, special promotions, and community events.

Media Release - 2026 Can-Jam Link Up - The Can-Jam Link Up is an annual Jamaican food festival, held in Castlegar BC. Each year we host the event in honor and support of local non-profit organizations, lunch programs for schools, inclusive summer camps for children. Part of the proceeds from the 2026 Canada Jamaica Link-up will be donated to Camp Koolaree, a non-profit kids camp in Nelson BC, and to Kootenay Emergency Response Physicians Association, (KERPA).

- WHERE: meet at the gravel pit at the end of Erie Pitt road, just off of 2nd relief.

- Bring gloves, good workwear and shoes. We will have tools but feel free to bring a rake and/or lopper if you have one!

Workshop - Medicinal Plant Salve & Tincture Making Workshop - Plant-based remedies have been used for millennia to treat ailments and to maintain health. In this workshop, led by Sinixt knowledge keepers Faith Zacherle and Kalaya Love Zacherle, participants will learn about the medicinal properties of locally available plants and then be guided through three different processes to make samples of salves, tinctures, and toners that they can take home with them. All materials will be provided.

Media Release - Selkirk College Summer Film Camps This summer, Selkirk College is offering a Film Production camp for students ages 14-18, and 3 Big Screen Dreams film camps for ages 8-13. The film camp is a unique, long-standing program that connects youth in the community through hands-on creative education.
Founded in 2007, the camp has engaged hundreds of participants aged 8–18 in creating short films from start to finish, offering a professional-level experience in storytelling and production.

With a local Nelson team at the heart of the show, Director Jeremy Grant with story producers Carlo Alcos and Carla Sinclair are excited to share the series is slated to air in 2027. Centered around Nelson’s wildly competitive annual burger competition, the series captures the passion, pressure, creativity, and community behind one of the most unique culinary events in the country.

Media Release - Oxygen Welcomes Queer Textile Artists For Summer Residency - "Three Way Mirror"
Oxygen Art Centre excitedly announces their summer residency program with artist collective, Three Way Mirror, from July 3, 2026, to August 7, 2026. Three Way Mirror is composed of artists Daniel Barrow (QC), Glenn Gear (QC), and Paige Gratland (BC). The artists visit Nelson from Montréal and Vancouver for a six-week residency where they will develop their textile practices individually and collectively in what they call a craft ‘triangle’.
The public are invited to attend two informal open studio events during the residency period to engage with the artists and encounter works-in-progress. Open studio events are scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2026, and Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Admission is free. Everyone welcome to attend.

Media Release - KORE Outdoors Member Mountain Munchies Receives $127,000 to Expand Enercheez
The Kootenay Outdoor Recreation Enterprise (KORE Outdoors), a non-profit industry alliance supporting outdoor gear and apparel makers, designers, and entrepreneurs in British Columbia’s Kootenay region, is pleased to announce that KORE Outdoors member Mountain Munchies will receive $127,000 from the Government of British Columbia through the BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund. The funding will enable Mountain Munchies, based in Nelson, B.C., to build a new facility, increase
production, expand distribution of its Enercheez product across Canada, and hire two additionalemployees.

News Release - Missing man believed to have been swept away in Columbia River - On June 21, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., frontline officers responded to multiple reports of a lone man in distress in the Columbia River. Witnesses reported seeing the man being carried downstream by the current. A backpack believed to belong to the man was later located along the shoreline. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to contact the Castlegar RCMP at (250) 365‑7721.

News Release - Two bodies discovered up isolated Forest Service Road, deaths not believed to be criminal - Police believe the deaths of two individuals whose bodies were discovered in a remote area near Nakusp are not criminal in nature. The RCMP is now working in support of the BC Coroners Service, which has conduct of the investigation. Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Nakusp RCMP at 250-265-3677.

Media Release - Southern Michif Introductory Language Online Course - This course consists of 6 interactive 90-minute online lessons on Tuesday evenings from September 15 – October 20 taking place at 6pm PT.
This course is open to everyone, and is offered free of charge through a partnership with Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC). If you are a non-Indigenous learner we ask that you review these reflections prior to the first session.
Southern Michif is a traditional language of the Métis people. It is also known as Michif, Michif Cree, Heritage Michif, aan Cree, and aañ Crii. Participants will have the opportunity to delve into the rich Métis heritage and acquire fundamental Michif language skills. Led by a traditional Michif speaker Marie Schoenthal, this workshop promises an immersive experience that celebrates and preserves Métis culture.

Media Release - Suspended Fund/Pay-it-Forward fund at Wait's on Nelson Needs our Help! If someone has money to contribute to the suspended fund, they contribute. Sometimes this is 50 cents, sometimes it is $50. Any and all contributions are welcomed. When someone is hungry/tired/needs a break from the elements, and not able to pay, they can access the suspended fund to cover the cost of their meal or a muffin or a hot cup of coffee. Wait's on Nelson currently serves approximately 15 suspended meals per day - more on weekends. That's in the 420 meals per month range!

The 1K is a fun kids run. The 5K run/walk is along the waterfront. The 10K run has rolling hills but ends in a fast, flat finish. This distance is chip timed.

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project
The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history. The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

Riven by Maggie Tchir - explores “our humanity; the relationships we cultivate with others through our personal and collective voices, highlighting global environmental and social justice/political viewpoints”. Her practice is process-based with a strong interest in materiality and making. She lives and maintains a studio in Nelson.
