Speaker - Genevieve Robertson Artist Talk - Genevieve Robertson was artist-in-residence at Oxygen Art Centre from November 12 to December 20, 2025. Robertson works at the intersection of visual art and environmental studies. Her practice is grounded in drawing and painting, extending to video, installation, and various forms of collective work and collaboration. Through long-term place-based research projects, her work explores anthropogenic impacts on ecology and the climate, and the intelligence and interconnection of the life systems of which we are part.

Media Release - Notice about Outdoor Stoves & other Wood Burning devices during Campfire Ban - Outdoor stoves or devices that burn wood are prohibited when a campfire prohibition is enacted unless they are vented through a structure that has a flue and is incorporated in a building. This includes devices such as grills, fire pits, pizza ovens, wood-fired hot tubs, saunas, smokers and related devices.

Outdoor stoves or devices are allowed if:

They burn charcoal briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel as a fuel source
Has a flame height less than 15 cm
Is certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC).

Repeat Property Offender Facing Additional Charges
Between May 24 and May 30, 2026, the Nelson Police Department responded to 179 calls for service within the City of Nelson. Calls included proactive patrol activities, traffic enforcement, property crime investigations, public safety concerns, and requests for police assistance from members of the community.

Media Release - Stage 1 water conservation measures in effect for all RDCK water systems starting June 1

Effective, Monday, June 1, 2026, mandatory Stage 1 water conservation measures will be implemented across all Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) water systems. These measures will remain in place from June 1 through September 30. Stage 1 may increase to one of three additional stages should demand increase significantly, hot and dry weather persists, or if reservoirs decline to critically low levels.

Stage 1 Water Conservation Measures Include:

Watering of lawns (Including new lawns), gardens, trees, and shrubs ONLY between the hours of 7:00 pm to 10:00 am
Watering using drip irrigation, a watering can, and or hand held hose is permitted at anytime.

Fundraising Opportunity and Celebration of the lives of Detective Wade Tittemore and Constable Mathieu Nolet - Nelson Police Department Memorial Run/Walk. 5K Run/Walk; 10K Run & 1K Kids Fun Run - This community event brings together runners, walkers, families, friends and supporters to raise funds for a scholarship in their name, awarded to a deserving LV Rogers student. The 1K is a fun kids run. The 5K run/walk is along the waterfront. The 10K run has rolling hills but ends in a fast, flat finish. This distance is chip timed.

Media Release - Southern Michif Introductory Language Online Course - This course consists of 6 interactive 90-minute online lessons on Tuesday evenings from September 15 – October 20 taking place at 6pm PT.

This course is open to everyone, and is offered free of charge through a partnership with Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC). If you are a non-Indigenous learner we ask that you review these reflections prior to the first session.

Southern Michif is a traditional language of the Métis people. It is also known as Michif, Michif Cree, Heritage Michif, aan Cree, and aañ Crii. Participants will have the opportunity to delve into the rich Métis heritage and acquire fundamental Michif language skills. Led by a traditional Michif speaker Marie Schoenthal, this workshop promises an immersive experience that celebrates and preserves Métis culture.

Media Release - Suspended Fund/Pay-it-Forward fund at Wait's on Nelson Needs our Help! If someone has money to contribute to the suspended fund, they contribute. Sometimes this is 50 cents, sometimes it is $50. Any and all contributions are welcomed. When someone is hungry/tired/needs a break from the elements, and not able to pay, they can access the suspended fund to cover the cost of their meal or a muffin or a hot cup of coffee. Wait's on Nelson currently serves approximately 15 suspended meals per day - more on weekends. That's in the 420 meals per month range!

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history. The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

35th Annual Photo Show by the West Kootenay Camera Club - The club’s objective is to promote the interest in Photographic Arts in the West Kootenay area of BC. Members are from the surrounding community of Castlegar, the Greater Trail area, Nelson, and Balfour. The exhibition follows the club’s long-running Photo Salon print competition, which is open to photographers of all skill levels across the region and beyond. Opening Reception June 5.

Still Life...and Death by Tamara Koenig-Fraser - a third generation Kootenay child, born and raised in Nelson, who was lured away from this beautiful valley by the excitement and possibilities of Cities. The contrasts were stimulating and expansive but the Lake and Forests eventually called her home. Kaslo has held her since 1989.
Riven by Maggie Tchir - explores “our humanity; the relationships we cultivate with others through our personal and collective voices, highlighting global environmental and social justice/political viewpoints”. Her practice is process-based with a strong interest in materiality and making. She lives and maintains a studio in Nelson.
