From Shambhala Music Festival

Indigenous Grant Funding Initiatives - Shambhala Music Festival administers two annual funding initiatives: the Indigenous University Bursary Program, and the Indigenous Artist Grant Program.

The Annual Artist Grant is awarded to Indigenous visual or performance artists who wish to share their work with the Shambhala Farmily during our annual event. The total funding allocated for this program is $5000, divided between 2 successful applicants: Professional Artist Grant: $3500; Emerging Artist Grant: $1500.
The Indigenous University Bursary program provides non-repayable financial support for First Nations, Métis, or Inuit students who are currently enrolled in (or are applying for) a full-time university or college program in BC or Canada in the 2026/2027 academic year. The total funding allocated for this program is $5000, to be divided between up to 10 successful applicants.

Community Kite Day at Kokanee Creek Park Welcomes Spring

Come one, come all to fly a kite and welcome spring to the beautiful West Kootenays. Kite Day is a free community event that takes place at Kokanee Creek Provincial Park between 1 and 3 pm on Easter Sunday, April 5. Pack your kite and a picnic, and bring along your friends and family to enjoy a delightful afternoon of flying kites and watching them soar on the main Sandspit beach.

Keep an eye to the skies for some sun and a brisk wind. This event will not run if it is raining.

A friendly reminder that dogs must always be leashed in the park and are not allowed on the beach at any time.

Media Release - UPDATE: Nelson Community Health Services Centre - Some services offered through Interior Health will be returning to the Nelson Community Health Services Centre following a temporary closure at the facility in December 2025 due to water damage.

Services that will be relocated back to the centre starting Wednesday, March 25, include:

Adult day services
Mental health and substance use (MHSU) services for seniors
Public health (call ahead for drop-in availability)
Early childhood development
Environmental public health program support

All remaining MHSU services, (substance use counselling and after-care, counselling and treatment, psychiatry, and outreach services), will continue at 514 Vernon Street for now.

Services starting on Monday, March 30 at Nelson Community Health Services Centre:

Public Notice - FireSmart Yard Clean Up Burn Period Until May 17 - With spring upon us, now is a great time to reduce the risk of wildfire around your property. In order to make it easier for folks to get rid of collected wildfire fuels such as woody debris, fallen branches and low hanging limbs, the Fire Chief has authorized a backyard burn period within the City of Nelson. From now until May 17th 2026 (weather permitting), residents can obtain a permit to burn these fuels in their backyards. Here's what to do:

Visit the Nelson Fire Hall with a copy of your current home insurance and $10 cash or cheque.
Each day that you wish to burn, you must call the Fire Hall at 250-352-3103 to register your burn and obtain daily authorization.

Restrictions apply, so please review the details at:

If you miss the burn window, or want another option to dispose of your collected wildfire fuels and yard waste, you can also dump eligible* yard waste for free during the month of May at the Grohman Transfer Station.

Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program - The City of Nelson and its Cultural Development Committee are pleased to announce the Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program. This program displays art by local and regional artists within the City’s indoor public spaces, promoting and reflecting the creative nature of Nelson.

“This program is a wonderful way to both support our talented and diverse pool of artists and bring a vibrancy to our City Hall, affirming the City’s commitment to supporting arts, culture and heritage,” says CDC Chair Sydney Black.

The deadline for submissions is May 22, 2026. Applicants are asked to provide electronic images of their pieces, along with the medium, dimensions, value and artist bio. All artwork must be suitably framed and ready for hanging.

Submissions will be adjudicated by the CDC’s Public Art Working Group, and the accepted works will be installed in June 2026.

Media Release - A Month for the Planet: EarthDays Nelson kicks off series of community events - Living in rural BC, we are fortunate to be able to have a daily connection to the earth. Our lakes, rivers, forests, mountains, trails and gardens are so accessible. And this year, during the month of April we have a specific time to celebrate our world.

The traditional April 22 Earth Day celebration was expanded last year to Earth Week, featuring 25 events involving 1000 participants and hundreds of volunteer hours over the week. This year Earth Days will take place over the whole month of April.

Media Release - Nelson Police Department launches NHL STREET™ - The Nelson Police Department is inviting local youth to hit the pavement this spring with the launch of a new NHL STREET™ hockey program, designed to be fun, inclusive, and accessible to every child in the community.

The NHL STREET™ program is the National Hockey League’s official youth street hockey league, offering a neighbourhood-based model that gives kids the opportunity to learn and play the game.

“This program is about creating opportunities,” said Nelson Police Inspector Jason Jewkes, who is spearheading the initiative. “We want to introduce kids to hockey in a way that’s welcoming, affordable, and inclusive for everyone.”

The program will run on May 23, May 30, June 6, and June 13 at the Lions Park basketball court.

Each session will include a 20-minute practice followed by a game consisting of two 20-minute halves, with games scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Media Release - Spring Street Cleaning is Underway! - Report those Potholes! - City crews have begun our annual street cleaning to remove the sand and debris left behind from winter. Each year, crews clean approximately 80 km of roadway throughout the city.

How can you help?

✅ Watch for sandwich board signs indicating sweeping in your neighbourhood

✅ Move vehicles off the street when sweeping is scheduled

✅ Sweep sand from sidewalks and boulevards onto the street at the curb edge.

Call for artist housing: summer residency - We're looking for housesitting / billeting options for three visiting artists in Nelson from July 1, 2026, to August 7, 2026. The three artists work primarily in textiles across their individual practices and as a collective. They will be engaged in their summer residency at Oxygen Art Centre during this time period. The artists will have 24/7 access to Oxygen's facility during the residency, so we're looking for cozy accommodations for the artists to find rest and to feel more embedded within the community. We're open to various options, including shared or individual accommodations for the artists. Partial durations for the six-week residency are also welcome. Parking for one vehicle will be required.

Honorariums will be offered to hosts in exchange for their generosity.

While we are eager for your input, it is important to note that certain core elements of this policy, such as specific reporting timelines, oversight requirements and Board options, are mandated by the Police Act. While they provide the legal framework we must follow, they also serve as the foundation for the more flexible, community-facing aspects of the policy.

We are looking for candid feedback on the "human" side of this policy. Specifically:

Accessibility: Is the language clear? Are the methods for submitting a complaint inclusive and easy to find? Barriers: Are there any perceived hurdles in the draft that might discourage someone from coming forward?

Shota and Maya here. We’re reaching out to share an update on our mom, Carla Hutchinson, and to ask for some support for our parents during a really challenging time for our family.

As many of you know, our mom was recently diagnosed with a very rare cancerous tumor in her foot. This required her to have a below-knee amputation of her right leg on December 11th in Vancouver.

Although the surgery went well, it’s been a big adjustment for her. For the foreseeable future, our mom won’t be able to keep up with her practice at Crystal Creek Physiotherapy. It’s been especially tough because she genuinely loves her work and is so dedicated to her patients.

Since she isn’t able to work right now, our parents' income has taken a major hit just as the expenses are starting to add up—including medical travel, rehab, and the prosthetics she’ll need down the road. To get our mom back to the life she loves—including her passion for hiking and cross-country skiing—she will require an advanced prosthetic leg which costs between $15,000–$20,000. This does not include the cost of the specialized rehab she will require or the fact that these prosthetics need to be replaced every 3–5 years for the rest of her life.

GoFundMe - Community Outreach for Nelson's Most Vulnerable: As a community of men this winter, we’ve been showing up consistently for people in Nelson who need it most.

Families grieving the loss of fathers to suicide and overdose.

The homeless population of our streets, living in the cold.
People who are struggling quietly and often forgotten.
We’ve brought hot meals and drinks, warm clothing, and simple human presence.
We’ve shared stew, chili and hot chocolate on cold days.
We’ve handed out toques, mitts, jackets, dental essentials, socks, underwear, and more.

And every time, something shifts. In them, and in us. The frequency grows, and more men get involved. Right now, we’re raising funds to directly support these outreaches: food, clothing, and essential supplies for people in Nelson who need care, warmth, and connection. We are not a charity or NGO. There are no overhead or admin costs.

100% of donations go directly to helping people.

We are simply a group of local men, Nelson Men’s Group, who have spent years doing deep inner work together. This work has shaped us into men who show up: for our families, for each other, and for our broader community in need.

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history.

The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

LOOT: Orienting to Matter - The Ten Thieves Artist Collective includes Susan Andrews Grace, Jim Holyoak, Eimear Laffan, Hildur Jonasson, Genevieve Robertson, Maggie Shirley, Marnie Temple, Deborah Thompson and Carol Wallace. The artists came together in January of 2023 as a reading group to discuss post-human feminism, an inspirational imagining of classical humanism from a feminist perspective. Inaugural exhibition.

Downloading our app not only allows you to stay up to date on crucial wildfire information, you can also report a wildfire if you see one.

The app lets you upload photos, which can helpful if you feel unsure about how to describe the wildfire.

Low-income and heat vulnerable customers, who are referred through their regional health authority's Home Care Program, may be eligible for the free AC program.

If you have a chronic respiratory or immune illness portable AC’s can be claimed as a medical expense.
