Press Release - Kootenay Regional Film Commission Receives $46,600 to Support Film Forward Regional Resiliency Strategy - The Kootenay Regional Film Commission is thrilled to announce it has received $46,600 in funding from ETSI-BC in support of the Film Forward: Regional Resiliency Strategy, an initiative designed to help grow a stronger and more resilient film industry in the Kootenays.
Focusing on Central Kootenay and the Kootenay Boundary, the project will expand the region’s film locations library on Creative BC’s Reel-Scout platform, while also training local photographers as location scouts, while continuing to support local producers and film crews.

‘Spring forward’ on March 8 will be the last time change, ending twice-yearly clock changes -
- B.C. will adopt permanent, year-round daylight saving time after clocks shift forward an hour on Sunday, March 8, 2026
- People and businesses will have eight months to prepare for the elimination of the next time change, previously scheduled for Nov. 1, 2026
- Eliminating twice-yearly time changes reduces disruptions for families, simplifies scheduling and provides an extra hour of evening light during the winter months

Media Release - The Nelson Police Department has concluded it’s investigation into the disappearance of Mr. Christopher Newton. - Mr. Newton was reported missing in January of 2025. During the investigation human remains were located in an area north of Nelson, BC. Nelson RCMP were advised and began an investigation.
On March 3, 2026 the BC Coroners Service advised the Nelson Police Department that the remains have been determined to belong to Mr. Newton effectively closing the missing person investigation. The Nelson Police Department would like to thank the public and our partner agencies for their assistance throughout the investigation. At the request of family no other details will be provided by the Nelson Police Department“

Indigenous Grant Funding Initiatives - Shambhala Music Festival administers two annual funding initiatives: the Indigenous University Bursary Program, and the Indigenous Artist Grant Program.

The Annual Artist Grant is awarded to Indigenous visual or performance artists who wish to share their work with the Shambhala Farmily during our annual event. The total funding allocated for this program is $5000, divided between 2 successful applicants: Professional Artist Grant: $3500; Emerging Artist Grant: $1500.

The Indigenous University Bursary program provides non-repayable financial support for First Nations, Métis, or Inuit students who are currently enrolled in (or are applying for) a full-time university or college program in BC or Canada in the 2026/2027 academic year. The total funding allocated for this program is $5000, to be divided between up to 10 successful applicants.

The artists will have 24/7 access to Oxygen's facility during the residency, so we're looking for cozy accommodations for the artists to find rest and to feel more embedded within the community. We're open to various options, including shared or individual accommodations for the artists. Partial durations for the six-week residency are also welcome. Parking for one vehicle will be required.
Honorariums will be offered to hosts in exchange for their generosity.

Your input wanted - Zoning Bylaw Update - With the recent approval of a new Official Community Plan (OCP) it's time to take a look at the City's Zoning Bylaw.
The purpose of the Zoning Bylaw review is to ensure the Bylaw is:
- aligned with the newly adopted Official Community Plan (OCP);
- up-to-date with recent provincial changes to planning and development rules; and
- easier for everyone to read, understand, and use.
Although it may sound like a big task, overall, there are very few major changes being considered; it's mostly a lot of minor changes. Based on past feedback from the public, City staff have identified multiples sections of the Bylaw that could benefit from a re-write to improve clarity and make it less complex.

Help Carla walk, hike and thrive again
Shota and Maya here. We’re reaching out to share an update on our mom, Carla Hutchinson, and to ask for some support for our parents during a really challenging time for our family.
As many of you know, our mom was recently diagnosed with a very rare cancerous tumor in her foot. This required her to have a below-knee amputation of her right leg on December 11th in Vancouver.
Although the surgery went well, it’s been a big adjustment for her. For the foreseeable future, our mom won’t be able to keep up with her practice at Crystal Creek Physiotherapy. It’s been especially tough because she genuinely loves her work and is so dedicated to her patients.
Since she isn’t able to work right now, our parents' income has taken a major hit just as the expenses are starting to add up—including medical travel, rehab, and the prosthetics she’ll need down the road. To get our mom back to the life she loves—including her passion for hiking and cross-country skiing—she will require an advanced prosthetic leg which costs between $15,000–$20,000. This does not include the cost of the specialized rehab she will require or the fact that these prosthetics need to be replaced every 3–5 years for the rest of her life.

Andrew has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive sinonasal cancer, and next week he’ll be heading to Vancouver for major surgery to remove the tumour. The surgery will mean the loss of one of his eyes, and he’ll need at least three months to recover and adjust to this huge change.
Anyone who knows Robyn and Andy knows how full of love and kindness they are. They’re the kind of people who have always shown up for everyone else, and now they really need us to show up for them.
While Andrew recovers, Robyn won’t be able to work so she can focus on being there to support him through healing, appointments, and their new normal. This GoFundMe is to help them cover rent, bills, groceries, and travel costs while they get through the next few months.

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project
The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history.
The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

The view from atop Nelson’s YMCA
This postcard that sold on eBay recently intrigues me to no end. It was taken circa 1919-20 and looks northeast from the roof of the YMCA in Nelson, which is today home to the Royal Canadian Legion and Traction on Demand. This card was made by an Ottawa company called Heliotype, which published a large number of cards, all around the same time. Their lithographs were uniformly poor, but often depicted unusual views like this one.

Hollywood Rebranded My Hometown | How a Movie Transformed Nelson, BC - This is Nelson, British Columbia — the mountain town where I grew up in the 1970s and 80s.
Back then, it was a working-class mining and railway town on the brink of economic collapse. Jobs were disappearing. Families were leaving. Many believed Nelson would become a ghost town. Then Hollywood arrived. In 1987, Roxanne, starring Steve Martin, was filmed here — rebranding my hometown as “Nelson, Washington” and introducing its Victorian streets and mountain backdrop to the world. That film helped transform Nelson from a struggling resource town into a sought-after lifestyle destination.
