Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program - The City of Nelson and its Cultural Development Committee are pleased to announce the Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program. This program displays art by local and regional artists within the City’s indoor public spaces, promoting and reflecting the creative nature of Nelson.

“This program is a wonderful way to both support our talented and diverse pool of artists and bring a vibrancy to our City Hall, affirming the City’s commitment to supporting arts, culture and heritage,” says CDC Chair Sydney Black.

The deadline for submissions is May 22, 2026. Applicants are asked to provide electronic images of their pieces, along with the medium, dimensions, value and artist bio. All artwork must be suitably framed and ready for hanging.

Submissions will be adjudicated by the CDC’s Public Art Working Group, and the accepted works will be installed in June 2026.

By folding cranes together, we’re creating a quiet, mindful space to connect—offline. Media Release - Nelson Police Department launches NHL STREET™ - The Nelson Police Department is inviting local youth to hit the pavement this spring with the launch of a new NHL STREET™ hockey program, designed to be fun, inclusive, and accessible to every child in the community.

The NHL STREET™ program is the National Hockey League’s official youth street hockey league, offering a neighbourhood-based model that gives kids the opportunity to learn and play the game. `

“This program is about creating opportunities,” said Nelson Police Inspector Jason Jewkes, who is spearheading the initiative. “We want to introduce kids to hockey in a way that’s welcoming, affordable, and inclusive for everyone.”

The program will run on May 23, May 30, June 6, and June 13 at the Lions Park basketball court.

Each session will include a 20-minute practice followed by a game consisting of two 20-minute halves, with games scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

This includes tributaries around Trout Lake, Lardeau River, Kaslo, Nakusp, Edgewood, Fauquier, and surrounding areas. Fast-flowing rivers pose increased risk to safety. Stay away from rivers and riverbanks, which can be unstable. Never drive through floodwaters, as unseen hazards and current can be life threatening.

Six grade 4 students from Winlaw Elementary School have earned second place at the Grand Finale of the Regional Reading Link Challenge held May 6 at Trafalgar Middle School Library in Nelson. In the Reading Link Challenge, teams of six students read the same six books then compete in trivia-style quiz competitions based on their knowledge of what they’ve read. The Winlaw Bookworms pushed through two rounds of overtime in a nail-biting final, finishing second to South Nelson Elementary School by a single point.

Media Release - Trail and Greater District RCMP respond to fatal RV fire near 7 Mile Dam - On May 12, 2026, Trail and Greater District RCMP were called to assist Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue with a recreational vehicle fire in the area of 7 Mile Dam. The fire was reported as a fully engulfed RV that had been parked in a remote location, and at the time it was unknown whether anyone was inside.

Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue crews attended, extinguished the fire, and prevented it from spreading to the surrounding forested area. During their examination of the scene, responders located two deceased individuals within the fire debris.

It’s been especially tough because she genuinely loves her work and is so dedicated to her patients. Since she isn’t able to work right now, our parents' income has taken a major hit just as the expenses are starting to add up - she will require an advanced prosthetic leg which costs between $15,000–$20,000.

While Andrew recovers, Robyn won’t be able to work so she can focus on being there to support him through healing, appointments, and their new normal. Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project

The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history. The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

The Nelson Museum, Archives, & Gallery is both an art gallery and history museum with an extensive regional archive.

2026 Members Show & Sale - All NMAG Members were invited to participate. Our last members’ exhibition took place in 2023, and was a beautiful and eclectic display of the talent, dedication and passion that exists within the Nelson community and area. Work for sale is a 60/40 split between artist and the museum, providing an excellent opportunity for emerging artists to sell their work, as well as support the museum’s exhibitions and programming. Gentle Resistance by Tracy Fillion - This ongoing project began with an interest in the intersection of design, sport, and feminism, and has evolved into a space to hold and transform growing internalized rage in response to widespread social, environmental, and human rights violations. The boxing glove serves as a central form—both a symbol of conflict and a container for emotion. Constructed through the slow, deliberate process of hand weaving and textile assembly, the work holds a tension between method and feeling: a quiet, careful making that contrasts with an undercurrent of anger. March 28 to June 3.
