Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program - The City of Nelson and its Cultural Development Committee are pleased to announce the Call for Artists for 2026's Art Rental Program. This program displays art by local and regional artists within the City’s indoor public spaces, promoting and reflecting the creative nature of Nelson.
“This program is a wonderful way to both support our talented and diverse pool of artists and bring a vibrancy to our City Hall, affirming the City’s commitment to supporting arts, culture and heritage,” says CDC Chair Sydney Black.
The deadline for submissions is May 22, 2026. Applicants are asked to provide electronic images of their pieces, along with the medium, dimensions, value and artist bio. All artwork must be suitably framed and ready for hanging.
Submissions will be adjudicated by the CDC’s Public Art Working Group, and the accepted works will be installed in June 2026.

The tradition of folding 1000 paper cranes, or senbazuru, comes from a Japanese belief that it grants a wish—often for peace, healing, or hope.This month, the Nelson Izu-shi Friendship Society is partnering with Nelson Public Library's “Digital Detox” event to honor that spirit. By folding cranes together, we’re creating a quiet, mindful space to connect—offline. Whether you join us at the park on Saturday, May 23rd or drop off cranes at the library, your folds help build something meaningful.Origami supplies are available at the library all month, and at Cottonwood Falls Park on May 23rd. People are welcome to fold cranes at their own pace and bring them to the library to be strung up.

Media Release - Nelson Police Launch NHL Street Hockey Program for Area Youth - The Nelson Police Department is inviting local youth to hit the pavement this spring with the launch of a new NHL Street hockey program designed to be fun, inclusive, and accessible to every child in the community.
The program starts TODAY May 23, May 30, June 6, and June 13 at the Lions Park basketball court.
Each session will include a 20-minute practice followed by a game consisting of two 20-minute halves, with games scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m

Join us on May 30 for a ride and a Block Printing Workshop. We will start at mountain station and ride to Cottonwood Regional Park. We will meet block printing artist Gillian Kloet, who will teach us the art of block printing on our own bandanas. Then we will make our way back to mountain station to finish the ride.
Limited to 12 participants. All block printing materials provided. Light snacks and beverages will also be provided. Please pack your own lunch, appropriate clothing, and bike repair kits.

Media Release - Prescribed Burn planned for Slater Creek area - To help reduce the risk of wildfires, the BC Wildfire Service is supporting Harrop-Procter Community Co-operative in conducting a prescribed burn in the Slater Creek area. This burn is located approximately 3.5 kilometres southwest of Harrop and will cover up to 20 hectares.
The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
Smoke may impact residents near the burn area and may be visible from Harrop-Procter, Balfour and surrounding communities, and to motorists travelling along Highway 3A.

The Nelson Police Department is providing a weekly summary of notable calls for service and enforcement actions from May 10–17, 2026.
“Our officers respond to a wide range of calls each week from community assistance and medical-related calls to traffic enforcement,” said Community Safety Officer Singh. “We’re asking everyone to do their part by making safe choices and contacting police right away if they suspect someone is driving impaired.”
- Drug-impaired driving investigation – Gyro Park Road
- Motor vehicle incident – Collision with pole (mall parking lot)
- Traffic enforcement – Stop sign violation and uninsured vehicle

News Release - Repeat speeder watched by police gets his car impounded near Salmo
A speeding habit can add up to losing your vehicle, especially when you are indulging your habit in front of an off-duty police officer.
On May 14, 2026, just before 6:30 a.m., an on-duty BC Highway Patrol officer stopped a blue hatchback for excessive speeding on Highway #3 near Salmo. A radar reading clocked the vehicle at 148 km/h in a 100 zone. That same vehicle had been observed speeding in that same area, at that same time, over multiple days, by an off-duty police officer.

Sometimes this is 50 cents, sometimes it is $50. Any and all contributions are welcomed. When someone is hungry/tired/needs a break from the elements, and not able to pay, they can access the suspended fund to cover the cost of their meal or a muffin or a hot cup of coffee. Wait's on Nelson currently serves approximately 15 suspended meals per day - more on weekends. That's in the 420 meals per month range!

Sproule Creek Bridge Replacement Project
The Sproule Creek Trail, located just outside Nelson, BC, follows a historic route first established in the early 1900s during the mining and logging era. This beautiful valley once featured a wagon road and a narrow-gauge railway built by the A.G. Lambert Lumber Co. between 1919 and 1930. Today, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers enjoy this multi-use trail system; walking through a living piece of West Kootenay history. The Friends of Pulpit Rock Society is proud to hold the contract to maintain the Sproule Creek Trail system. We are now raising funds to complete a critical safety upgrade: replacing three aging trail bridges.

Gentle Resistance by Tracy Fillion - This ongoing project began with an interest in the intersection of design, sport, and feminism, and has evolved into a space to hold and transform growing internalized rage in response to widespread social, environmental, and human rights violations. The boxing glove serves as a central form—both a symbol of conflict and a container for emotion. Constructed through the slow, deliberate process of hand weaving and textile assembly, the work holds a tension between method and feeling: a quiet, careful making that contrasts with an undercurrent of anger.

Riven by Maggie Tchir - explores “our humanity; the relationships we cultivate with others through our personal and collective voices, highlighting global environmental and social justice/political viewpoints”. Her practice is process-based with a strong interest in materiality and making. She lives and maintains a studio in Nelson.

Volunteer as a Firefighter - No previous experience is necessary, volunteers train to professional standards. The RDCK has 16 volunteer fire departments and 17 fire halls in the central kootenays.
Volunteer firefighters commit to a minimum 2 hours a week of training at their local fire hall.
