Living History
A Modern Look Back at
Our San Fernando Valley
The corner of Lankershim and Magnolia Boulevard, then and now | Top photo via Bob Peppermuller, bottom photo via Google maps

Before Starbucks became a ubiquitous presence worldwide and a staple at the corner of Lankershim and Magnolia Boulevard, the busy intersection was home to a 76 gas station. The picture above, which comes to us from North Hollywood resident Bob Peppermuller's personal collection, is a measure of the major changes that have occurred over the course of 45 years.

Flashing Beacons Approved
for Arts District Crosswalk

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - The City Council, at the behest of Councilmember Paul Krekorian, approved the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons at the intersection of Magnolia Boulevard and Blakeslee Avenue in North Hollywood.

Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons are flashing lights that accompany warning signs at intersections or mid- block crosswalks that have no traffic signals. According to the Los Angeles Dept. of Transportation (DOT), these devices increase driver and pedestrian safety, especially when coupled with crosswalks. DOT is slated to install the lights once funding is allocated in the coming weeks.

Councilmember Krekorian, who introduced the motion in December, activated two new traffic signals in North Hollywood last year to improve multimodal access in the area and enhance safety in the NoHo Arts District and beyond.

LAFD to Develop Awareness Campaign
About Smoke Alarm Use

LOS ANGELES - The City Council last week instructed the Los Angeles Fire Department to develop a citywide fire safety campaign to increase awareness about smoke alarms and carbon-monoxide monitor systems.

Fires that ripped through L.A.-area homes in January claimed the lives of seven people, each death attributed to the lack of smoke alarms, according to the LAFD. Last year, there were 20 fire-related deaths and 22 deaths in 2012. According to the National Fire Protection Association, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths occurred in properties without working smoke alarms.

The LAFD will develop a multi-language campaign and create informational material to educate the public on the use of smoke alarms and carbon-monoxide monitors, integrate fire safety and prevention programs in neighborhoods and distribute smoke detectors and batteries at local fire stations.

In the coming months, LAFD officials will also inform the City Council on the feasibility and cost of conducting yearly inspections in residential buildings to identify non-working or missing smoke alarms.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Homeless Connect Day convened in full force last week, as Councilmember Paul Krekorian's push to pair those in need with much-needed services reached dozens of individuals in the San Fernando Valley.

At the North Hollywood Interfaith Pantry Friday, more than 60 volunteers and aid workers from city, county, state and local agencies helped deliver advice and aid. Organizations such as L.A. Family Housing, Child Support Services, the San Fernando Valley Mental Health Center, the DMV, the Lion's Club Optometry Van, HIV mobile health clinic, Dept. of Public Health and the West L.A. Veterans Administration, worked with the attendees to provide eye care, health exams, consultations, identification cards and other services.

According to a recent survey, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority recorded a spike in homeless men, women and children in L.A. County - from 50,214 in 2011 to 57,373 in 2013.

Councilmember Krekorian, who has held several homeless outreach events throughout the Second District, continues to work toward long-term solutions for homelessness in the community through continued access to services and housing.

VAN NUYS - The San Fernando Valley Coalition on Gangs is on a mission to reduce gang related activities and crime throughout the Valley.

The San Fernando Coalition on Gangs works with the LAPD, city departments and community organizations to address gang-related public safety concerns by increasing community awareness and the community's access to youth and family services, such as after school programming.

Councilmember Krekorian, who recently met with members of the San Fernando Coalition on Gangs, police officials and local agencies, discussed the importance of community partnerships as an important tool to keep the public safe.
