MESSAGE FROM JOHN
Who will take home the GPS? There is a month and a half left to win the AvMap GPS. Have you reached out to raise awareness and funds for FMA programs and scholarships? Two of the four FMA Solo recipients have begun flight lessons while the other two begin very soon. Please follow their progress while lending your support to them at FMAsolo.org. Finally, AirVenture, or OSH as many still refer to it as, is fast approaching. Read on to find out what FMA is creating for you.

Your continued efforts are making a positive difference while growing the aviation community. We realize not everyone can financially support the association above and beyond membership dues, therefor we are constantly looking for other ways in which you can assist. Just a few minutes of your time per week can reap huge rewards. The FMA Corporate Member Drive is such an important part because by reaching out you are raising awareness of FMA. Worst case... you are planting the seed for future support.

The FMA Corporate Member Drive began in March and will continue through August 15. You can win a GPS donated by AvMap Satellite Navigation (a $1500 value). Visit the FMA website for details. We have four new corporate members: two in the aviation industry and two in the music industry.  Let's all make a final push and perhaps YOU will win the GPS.

Have you met your 2017 FMA Solo recipients? Visit the special FMA blogsite  to meet them and lend a few words of encouragement while following their progress.

Aaron Smokovitz, in Midland MI, and Isaac Hill, in Murfreesboro, TN, have penned several post along with pictures at FMAsolo.org. You'll not only read about flying lessons but also about their musical pursuits and activities.

Flight schools are stepping up too. Quality Aviation Services at Jack Barstow Municipal Airport (KIKW), Murfreesboro Aviation at Murfreesboro Airport (KMBT), and AvSport of Lock Haven at William T. Piper Airport (KLHV) have all made donations above our scholarship. They are also producing special Discovery Flight coupons to be distributed to local music programs and schools. A new feature "Flight Schools" has been created in the FMA newsletter to highlight their contributions. We are so fortunate to gain their support.

A huge thanks goes out to all the supporters, especially: Bose Aviation, Sporty's Pilot Shop,  GoFlight.com,  Gleim Aviation, Heaven's Landing,  Aviators Hot Line, Banjo Ben Clark, and Trade-A-Plane, Quality Aviation Services, AvSport of Lock Haven, and Murfreesboro Aviation.

Have you made plans to join us in Oshkosh for AirVenture? We hope you can! Minnesota Member Mark Schneider has arranged for a Flying Musicians night at the Beer Garden. Join Mark and your fellow FMs from 8pm-midnight for jamming. John Vining will once again host the Thursday evening open mic/jam at the red barn in the ultralight area. Elton Eisele, director of the AirVenture Concert Band, once again has invited FMs to participate. Several members will be performing including 2017 FMA Solo recipient Aaron Smokovitz and your NC ambassador Karen Baskin to name a couple.

I was contacted by Joey at Redbird to announce that they will be holding Redbird STEM Labs during AirVenture. This would include simulator time in the Jay Velocity! They would like to do a special class for FMA student members (5th-12th grades). Class size would be limited to ten students to ensure everyone gets plenty of sim time. Since this is such short notice and if we max out the FMA class, students can register individually online here. Just tell them you are a FMA member.

A proposal was sent to Joey for corporate membership. She has passed the proposal up the ladder. I have a feeling Redbird Flight Simulations will be jumping on the FMA bandwagon as a corporate member... real soon!

Check out the entire AirVenture schedule for FMA below in the EVENTS section and look on the website as we get closer.

The FMA newsletter will be published bimonthly during the summer. This is necessary to accommodate the vast number of projects that are in full bloom as well as a very busy schedule. In the fall we will discuss the paradigm shift that outdates newsletters in their current form. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Stay safe, engaged, and enthusiastic.

Blue Skies,

John

John Vining  (Ohio)

My interest in aviation started when I was about 8 years old when my community dedicated our new airport (now the Gerald R Ford International Airport) with an airshow that included the Blue Angels and Bob Hoover flying his P51 "Old Yeller"  I was completely enthralled and set about to fly by making various types of wings. With the wings strapped to my back I would ride my bike down my street trying to become airborne. I attended many airshows through my college years and eventually in my early adult life took lessons and got my private pilot's license.

I was very good at making and building things and had a mind for engineering, but I also was very talented at music and managed to be accepted at the Cleveland Institute of music. I studied there for five years before making my professional Opera debut with the Santa Fe Opera.  I moved to NYC and sang for the next ten years for many major opera companies including Pittsburgh Opera, Opera Memphis, Chicago Opera,  Opera Grand Rapids, and The Glimmerglass Opera. I also did many world premieres in NY including Kandinsky's The Yellow Sound and Musgrave's The Voice Of Ariadne. I also appeared in many off Broadway shows particularly Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein's "The Mother Of Us All" which won both an Obie award and a Drama Desk award.

After having a great time in opera and making no money I retired and completed a Masters in education. I have spent the past twenty years as Director of music at the St. Vincent School.  I love flying and love being at Airventure. One of my most delightful discoveries at the convention was the Flying Musicians Association.  I look forward to hosting each summer, the ultralight music jam.  We have such a great time with so many talented performers.

John volunteers at AirVenture as well as hosting the Thursday evening FMA Open Mic/Jam at the Red Barn in the Ultralight area.

John is also the US sales manager for Sdplanes located in the Czech Republic. SPACEK s.r.o. (Ltd) is home to the sd-1 minisport homebuilt airplanes and kits. SdplanesUSA offers these sporty single seat light aircraft to flight enthusiasts in both the USA and Canada. Ronald Beitel ( Minnesota )
(Caution: This is the sad part to Ron's story continued from last issue. We can all learn from this.)
I was part owner of a Piper Arrow PA-28 R 200. I was involved in a midair collision on short final to Johnson Creek Airport(3U2) in Yellow Pine, ID, that took my son's life and severely injured me. My injuries included a right compound femur fracture, a left tibia fracture, many broken ribs and cracked vertebrae, a broken collarbone, a completely de gloved right hand, a broken wrist and radius, broken fingers, and metacarpals, a ruptured pupil in my right eye, a broken nose, a brain contusion, a lacerated liver, and all the scrapes and abrasions that would go with having your airplane fall to the ground from 50 feet at 75 MPH. The biggest injury is the hole in my heart left by losing my precious boy at the tender young age of 21 months, and it will always be there. After a lengthy recovery, and then two years off from flying , I decided to get back in the air. I had chopped my certificate and medical and resigned my credentials with the FAA. To fly again, I had to pass all the tests again, the written, the oral, and the practical exam were required to get my license back. Passing wasn't my biggest obstacle, as I hadn't forgotten at all how to fly. In fact, my first landings after two years were all very good. My biggest obstacle was passing my class 3 medical exam. After all my injuries, my AME had to defer my medical to the medical certification division of the FAA. They asked for all of my records pertaining to my treatments and medications after the crash, and asked me to have all of my injuries examined again and documented again. On my check ride, I was rechecked on my hood work because it took me too many turns to keep the VOR OBS centered. After some additional hood time with a CFI, I passed on 9/30/2015. I was renting an Archer for this retesting. Those are fun planes to fly. Right now, I own a Cessna 150E. It has a lot of fun options added to it, including a Horton STOL kit. I am not doing a lot of cross country flying at this time, so something cheap to operate is great for enjoying my flights looking at all the cows and corn here in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I do take it on short XC trips to see friends in Wisconsin. I fancy taking a long low and slow XC trip in it sometime, but I am not yet sure when or where I will go.

My accident was horrible. Every accident has a chain of events that leads up to it. When we sit down in person, we can talk about it. I haven't really discussed that aspect with many pilots, but I think we can all learn from it. If I go to an event I may speak about it there. I don't want others to make the same mistakes that I and the pilot in the other involved aircraft made. Thanks for lending an ear.

The AOPA Air Safety Institute is using this accident in their live seminars now.

Student Members in the News
This month you'll meet a few of the 2017 FMA Solo Finalists. They all are such outstanding individuals and we intend to help those who stay engaged.

Immanuel Santos ( 2017 FMA Solo Finalist  - Florida )
I am a 16 year old musician and aspiring pilot. I play the bassoon and I serve as a Drum Major of my school's marching band. Aviation is something I one day hope to make a career.

Immanuel is working on the Sporty's Learn to Fly course while enjoying his summer.

Jack Bumann (2017 FMA Solo Finalist - Illinois)
Jack is a 2017 graduating senior and trumpeter from AlWood High School in Woodhull, Illinois.  He will be attending Illinois Central College next fall where he will be a member of the ICC Men's Golf Team and the ICC Jazz Band.

Jack is both a performing and advisory member of the nationwide "Youth Trumpet and Taps Corps" organization and plays "Taps" for military funerals and at community events.  He was the constituent-initiator of Illinois House Bill 4432 that was signed into law by Governor Bruce Rauner as Public Law 99-0804 in August 2016.  This law officially excuses the absence of any Illinois student in grades 6-12 who sounds "Taps" during the school day.

In addition to "Taps," Jack also plays the "Call to Post" on his trumpet for harness horse races across Illinois.  He has participated in his school's concert/jazz/marching/pep bands and just finished performing the lead role of "Tony Manero" in the 2017 AlWood High School Musical, "Saturday Night Fever."

Jack plans to obtain his private pilot's license and either utilize that certification in the business world or with the Illinois State Police force.  When not playing his trumpet, Jack enjoys fishing and getting out to the golf course as much as possible.

Currently Jack is also working to complete the Sporty's Learn to Fly course.

Richard Green ( 2017 FMA Solo Finalist - North Carolina )
I am a graduating senior who was born in South Africa and have lived in California, Maryland, and now North Carolina. I started playing the violin in third grade in Maryland in my school's music program and have kept at it since. I now play in the Barton College -Wilson Symphony, a community orchestra run by Barton College. I occupy a paid position for a talented high school violinist. I am a Civil Air Patrol cadet, currently holding the rank of 2d Lt and have received the Mitchell Award, something only 15% of cadets achieve. Through CAP I've attended an Aviation Ground School and the Middle East Region Powered Flight Academy, where I received 10 hours of flight time in a Cessna 172. I am also a member of the local EAA chapter, and have attended the Advanced Air Academy in Oshkosh in 2016 and also went to AirVenture that year because of it.  I take every opportunity I can to go flying.  My most recent flying experience was in the Civil Air Patrol glider, which was incredible!

FMA SUPPORT STUDENTS
HOME FIELD SPOTLIGHT
Your Home Field
FMA members come from all over the world. In the interest of promoting our members, their airports, and aviation, we thought it would be interesting to showcase one member's home field each month.

This month's Home Field Spotlight focuses on Huntingburg Regional Airport (KHNB) home to member Travis McQueen. Travis is also the airport manager.

Tell us about  your airport:
The Dubois County Airport Authority owns and operates the Huntingburg Regional Airport (KHNB), a facility three miles south of the City of Huntingburg in Southern Indiana along US 231. US 231 and Interstate 64 intersect three miles south of the Huntingburg Airport, while I-69 is 22 miles to the west.

What makes it special/unique/interesting/fun?
Interesting: our airport is one of two airport authorities in the state of Indiana to have purchased/acquired a trainer aircraft, to develop a line for new pilots. It's interesting the reaction I get when I advise that we are a government entity, supported by property tax dollars, that owns and operates an aircraft for students and rental pilots. Of course, most folks understand when we advise that we have a very self-interest in keeping our hangars full with aircraft, paying into a fixed revenue stream and not depending upon the fluctuation of fuel sales to sustain the airport. Our Piper Warrior is a 1976 vintage, IFR capable and a great means of economical transportation .

The 2nd, interesting and unique thing about our airport is our Technology Park. We have over 200 acres, dedicated to the attraction of aviation/aerospace jobs. We work to market those acres to companies interested in expanding, relocating or looking for a partner willing to help in their supply chain constraints. We are simply leveraging our Indiana manufacturing capacity and racing industry experience.  To date we have over $50 million of private capital that has been invested into our Airport, by businesses. Tenants in the Technology Park take advantage of zero property taxes for the life of their leases. That is very unique in the US!

Fun: we have fun every week, in the fact that our local flying club makes it a point to fly somewhere, every Saturday to eat breakfast! The Lincoln Hills Aero Club (LHAC) is a great group of guys whom have fun flying and don't mind sharing it with others! This past Sunday, I had to come in for a PC-12 and saw one member of the LHAC introducing glider flying to an elderly gentlemen... that is Fun stuff!!

KHNB Recently Hosted 30 Students

The Speciality item we have is the proximity to Holiday World Splashin Safari . For those whom have never been their, it's a family based amusement park, located just :20 minutes from KHNB. I typically get 4-6 phone calls a week about flying in to attend the Park.

Are there any nearby attractions for FMA members?
Couple items stick out for fellow musicians .

One is the Lincoln Amphitheatre , located about 20 minutes from KHNB. It's a 1,500 seat outdoor venue with events all year long.

Two is the WRSFF (will read and sing for food) that happens every month at a different location. These events are always different and Scott welcomes new voices/musicians to contribute. The goal is to raise funds for food to give to local charities.

(Editor's Note)
Travis is planning a HangarJam in the fall so stay tuned for the date and time.

KHNB makes a great stop when flying to Oshkosh. They roll out the red carpet and reduce the fuel prices to make everyone happy.

EVENT RECAP

Miss Emily's HangarJam - Manhattan, KS
What a wonderful event to inspire future aviators within the ranks of musicians. $80.00 was raised along with a HUGE amount of awareness!

We had EAA, Civil Air Patrol, and Life Flight supporting our event! Kids got to launch Akla Fuji Rockets, fly paper airplanes, look at airplanes, and tour the helicopter.

My favorite moment was this little girl running from the helicopter back to the hangar yelling "MOM! I GOT TO SIT IN A HELICOPTER!!!"
After seeing the picture, John sent a shirt along for this little one. Does she like it?

The local paper covered the event and wrote a nice piece. Visit Little Apple Post.

HangarJam - New Bern, NC
FMA North Carolina ambassador, Karen Baskin, held her first HangarJam at New Bern (KEWN) on May 20 and we'd say she hit a homerun. Attendance was great, music was great, and several opportunities were found for future events to raise awareness of FMA and the FMA Solo Program. FMA southeast regional ambassador, Marcia Buckingham, made the trip from Florida to assist.

Karen Baskin writes:
A huge THANK YOU to you all for the support to make this first Flying Musicians Association HangarJam in partnership with the EAA Flying Bears Chapter a success!

Virginia counted 52 folks in attendance.  $202.00 was donated and split between both FMA and The EAA Bears Chapter; both organizations received $101.00 each for Scholarships. ( editor's note - another 100 dollars was donated to up the contribution to each to $151.00)

The winner of Fuller's Music Store gift card was a pilot, Brad Spencer and the winner of Tradewind Aviation Discovery Flight was a musician, Tim Wiscarva! Tim has graciously offered up his winnings for the Tradewinds Aviation to find a deserving youngster!

There is definite interest from some local band directors for having their kids play music next year and have asked me to check with them in December when they get their Spring Calendars in order.

Skypark Aviation Festival - Salt Lake City, UT
The Skypark Aviation Festival & Expo at KBTF just north of Salt Lake City UT was held June 2-3. The FMA had a reserved booth at the event which was staffed by NW Regional Ambassador Louise Vickerman both days. There was extensive media coverage from local tv stations & the turnout was the highest yet. There was a movie screening out on the ramp on friday night after dusk & Saturday featured skydivers from KOGD & some aerobatic displays. Interest in Flying Musicians was very high & many people stopped by the booth to find out more about our organization. I passed out ALL of the rack cards I had on me!

Here's what the KBTF FBO manager had to say about the event: " Thank you to everyone who came out to the Skypark Aviation Festival this year. This was the best one yet. We saw a lot of happy faces and the vendors really enjoyed this year and reported a lot of success at this event. It was a little hot but there was lot to do and some awesome food trucks this year. We hope to continue in 2018 and as always we will make changes to make this event even better. If things go as planned there could be big news for next years festival.

Lets plan on FMA having a bigger presence next year & hopefully we can get some folks together to perform at the festival.

FLIGHT SCHOOL
Now that we are in the third year of the FMA Solo Program, we are finding that flight schools as well as flight instructors are enthusiastically stepping up to support the recipients.

Murfreesboro Aviation is proud to be a part of the Flying Musicians Associations quest to Inspire, Educate, and Encourage!  We look forward to taking to the skies with Isaac as one of Tennessee's newest pilots!  The motto of Murfreesboro Aviation is "Up Here, It's About Trust!"  Murfreesboro aviation is honored to be entrusted with the opportunity to teach Isaac to fly in a responsible and safe manner.

Blake Tumbleson, general manager of Mufreesboro Aviation, surprised FMA Solo recipient Isaac Hill with the following at FMAsolo.org.

"I wanted to let you know that in addition to the hours awarded to you by the Flying Musicians Association, we've decided to donate 10 ADDITIONAL hours of flight time to you in our Cessna 152!

Murfreesboro Aviation has taught hundreds of people to fly and safely navigate the skies! We can't wait to teach YOU!"

Murfreesboro Aviation is the busiest privately-owned flight school in the state of Tennessee, owned by Jim Gardner.  In the past 4 years Murfreesboro Aviation has grown from a flight school to a maintenance and repair center, Cessna Authorized Service Center, FAA-Certificated Part 145 Maintenance Facility, avionics repair and installation facility, aircraft brokerage and acquisition services company, and FAA-Certificated part 135 charter operator.

PRODUCT REVIEW
SONY Professional USA
FMA received a large donation from Sony Pro in 2014. The donation consisted of wireless microphones (DWZ-M50) and wireless instrument packs (DWZ-B30GB).

Review by Bruce Dunai:
I've used only the wireless mic so far in an actual gig, but have tested out the wireless guitar unit and it works fine, just haven't taken the time to do all the set up at a live gig.  My gigs are generally 1 hr. that I try to squeeze in on a short schedule, so the extra time setting up the wireless with extra power, etc. hasn't been too convenient. The quality of the handheld is far superior to anything else I've used, with good distance and reception and sound quality! I'll try to be more diligent about using the equipment more, now that I have an acoustic/electric guitar I'm using regularly now.

Sony mics are great for harmonica too!

Members have been demoing units to use, test and review. Sony Pro wireless mics and instrument packs were used at several events last year and at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring, Florida this January.
